There are several Medical Assistance Programs offered in Virginia. Each program covers different groups of people and each program has different eligibility requirements. When someone applies for Medical Assistance, they are screened for all possible programs based on your age, income, financial resources, and other information. To be eligible for a Medical Assistance Program, a person must meet the financial and non-financial eligibility conditions for that program. Medicaid programs include: *Children under age 19; *Parents and caretakers of dependent children; *Pregnant women; *Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients; * Adults aged 65 or older, blind or disabled (not receiving SSI); *Children or adults who need long term care in a facility or home or who need community based care (Waiver) services; *Medicare beneficiaries; *Plan First - People who need family planning services; *Breast and cervical cancer early detection program.

Portsmouth Emergency Management works year-round to build a resilient community that is prepared to respond quickly and efficiently to natural, human-caused, and technological disasters. During emergency events, the department partners with local, state, federal, non-governmental, and volunteer organizations to keep the city's residents and visitors safe. The department also facilitates recovery efforts to rebuild our community following disasters.

It takes over 200 volunteers every day to keep Feed More's programs running. Volunteers support meal prep, food sorting, deliveries and more. Opportunities are available for individuals and groups.

The Treasurer is responsible for collecting all personal property and real estate taxes. Items taxable to individuals include: motor vehicles boats and trailers campers and mobile homes Items taxable to businesses include: furniture and fixtures machinery and tools merchants' capital, and other tangible personal property used in the course of business. The Treasurer is also responsible for collecting state income tax payments and estimated state income tax payments. Taxpayers may receive assistance in filling out their income tax papers in the office of the Commissioner of the Revenue. State income taxes are due and payable by May 1. The offices of the Commissioner of the Revenue and the Treasurer offer taxpayer assistance and all taxpayers may direct questions to either the Treasurer or the Commissioner.

Provides financial assistance to eligible families to help pay for the cost of child care so they can work or attend education or training programs. Services are child-centered and family-focused and support the broader objective of strengthening families' goals of economic self-sufficiency and quality early childhood programs for their children. Participating families may select any legally operating child day care facility eligible to participate in the program.

Provides planning, coordination and direction of emergency services for Northampton County in the event of a natural or national disaster. The Office of Civil Defense works in conjunction with the State Department of Civil Defense and Governor and is notified in the event of disaster. This agency also works closely with the County Health Department.

Provides Family Access to Medical Insurance Program (FAMIS). Provides health coverage for children who have not had any health insurance coverage for 6 months. It is designed to cover children of working VA families who make too much money to qualify for Medicaid and not enough money to afford private health insurance. Volunteers provide free counseling to Virginia residents regarding health insurance options and assistance with medical insurance forms. Also provides accurate and objective information, counseling, and assistance to Medicare beneficiaries on a wide range of health insurance issues, including Medicare, Medicaid, long-term care, and prescription drugs.

Clients are eligible to obtain food assistance through the ACTS Hunger Prevention Center once per month. Food is distributed on a walk-in basis. No appointment needed.

Builds houses to help disadvantaged, low income families from sub-standard housing, who are willing to help build their own home as well as other homes. Homes are built by volunteers and homeowners, known as partner families. Homes are sold to partner families with a no interest mortgage. Habitat families are selected: 1) completion of application and credit report, 2) ability to repay zero-interest mortgage, 3) inability to obtain conventional financing for a home, 4) living in substandard housing or homeless, 5) meet income requirements and 6) agree to partner with affiliate. Volunteers welcomed from all walks of life.

Provides a nutritionally balanced meal where eligible clients can meet in an atmosphere that provides socialization, education and recreation.
