The Planning Council has been recognized as a community convener around human services issues. From children's issues to homelessness, The Planning Council has identified areas of regional concern and brought together the decision makers and resources to address these challenges. With expertise in community needs assessments, research, and evaluation, data analysis, and implementation of new strategic plans, our team partners with local governments and businesses, non-profit agencies, and the faith-based community to address the most vulnerable populations' needs.

Assist needy families with rent. All applicants are screened through Amherst County Social Services or through personal contact from our group.

Provides financial assistance to eligible families to help pay for the cost of child care so they can work or attend education or training programs. Services are child-centered and family-focused and support the broader objective of strengthening families goals of economic self-sufficiency and quality early childhood programs for their children. MAGIC, the Management and Government Information Center, is a special collection and information service located at Chinn Park Library. MAGIC's collection focuses on local and state government information and publications. MAGIC has specialized staff and resources to assist members of the community, including local government agencies and area businesses and nonprofits, to start or grow a business, retrieve industry information, seek grant funding, and access laws and regulations.

Provides a juvenile and family matters court service unit that has jurisdiction over minors who have been charged with an offense, who have committed status offenses or traffic violations, or who have been neglected or physically or sexually abused. In addition, this court handles other matters involving the family such as custody, support and visitation. The court also hears family abuse cases, cases where adults have been accused of child abuse or neglect, and criminal cases where the defendant and alleged victim are family or household members.

The ReStore reuses, recycles and resells functional building materials and tools, thereby diverting thousands of tons of usable materials from local landfills. The community gets affordable and sometimes unusual items for home improvement and renovations at discounted prices.

Provides personalized care plans to meet the needs of each resident in the retirement community. A team of professionals including nurses, physicians, social workers, chaplain, and the dining services and activities staff members reviews every plan regularly. Our long-term care program provides regular activities, selective menus with specialized diets, resident beauty salon, barber services, medication management and an on-campus chapel and chaplain. Provides comprehensive, primary health care to individuals and families in need of its services. Care includes infant and child care, adolescent medicine, primary gynecology, adult primary care, geriatrics, preventive health care, and minor surgery.

Provides a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) for all special education children ages two to twenty-one. An Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is developed for each child who qualifies for special education services under IDEA. The IEP is specifically designed to meet the unique needs of the individual child. Provides an elementary educational institute and preschool that offers adaptations for test taking, audiological evaluation and diagnosis, and Child Find Service for disabled students.

Provides free primary health care to people in need, especially those who are uninsured, underinsured and those who have low income. Partnership clinic sites are located at other service organizations such as food pantries, homeless shelters, churches and outreach locations. Provides case management services through grade 5 in collaboration with Albemarle County Schools. Family Support provides prevention and case management to K-8 in 11 elementary and 3 middle schools.

Serivices include: * Medical services provided by Licensed Physician and Licensed Nurse Practitioners * X-ray and Lab services on site; * Mother and Infant Care Center(MICC) program available; * Sliding fee scale available to patients with no insurance and who qualify; * Free medication program available to patients with no insurance and who qualify.

Offers assessment, job placement, job retention services, supportive case management includes direct service and referral to community resources. TANF clients enrolled in the VIEW program receive assessment, job leads, job placement, budgeting information, day care assistance, and counseling to support work, training and education. Also offers some emergency need assistance.

The Environmental Health section conducts site evaluations and issues permits for septic systems and private wells where conditions allow. Other services include rabies prevention and post-exposure management, environmental assessment of lead hazards, investigation of environmental complaints and follow-up, West Nile Virus surveillance and specimen collection, and correction of violations identified during shoreline surveys conducted by the Division of Shellfish Sanitation.
