Amherst County 9-1-1 Communications Center serves as the public safety answering point (PSAP). The center takes calls for and dispatches the Amherst County Sheriff's Office, Amherst Town Police, Amherst Fire Department, Amherst Life Saving Crew, Monelison Fire and Rescue Department, Pedlar Fire, Amherst County Animal Control. Even though the Amherst County 911 Center has multiple functions, there are two primary job functions within the Communications Center. 1. Receiving Incoming Calls. When a telephone call is received by the Center either via 911 or on a non-emergency line, the telecommunicater collects the information from the caller. 2. Dispatching The Call. The operator then dispatches the call to the appropriate agency or agencies.

Licensed by the VDBHDS to provide Therapeutic Day Treatment to children and adolescents in the public-school setting. The focus of the program includes therapeutic interventions paired with education and mental health treatment. Students in the program receive services to include: group and individual counseling, psycho-educational groups, social skills guidance, medication education, and skill-building instruction.

A 27-bed assisted living facility. Level of service provided by an assisted living facility for adults who require assistance with at least two activities of daily living. Included in this level of service are individuals who require assistance because of significant behavior problems. Facilities licensed for the assisted living level of care also may provide care to residents who require only the residential level of care. Facilities with this qualification are permitted to care for only those residents who are physically and mentally capable of self-preservation without the assistance of another person, even if the residents require the assistance of a wheelchair, walker, cane, prosthetic device or a single verbal command to evacuate the building.

The Community Work Incentives Coordinator (CWIC) evaluates an individual's current benefit status, analyzes the impact of work and earnings on those benefits, and makes recommendations to the individual and other stakeholders in their life. CWICS provide: work incentives planning and assistance; help you and your family determine if you are eligible for Federal or State work incentives programs; refer you to local Employment Networks or State Vocational Rehabilitation agencies; general information about potential employer-based or federally subsidized health benefits coverage available to you once you enter the workforce; and inform you of the available protection and advocacy services available.

The County Administrator serves at the pleasure of the Board of Supervisors and is the County's Chief Administrative Officer. The Virginia Museum of History & Culture offer a variety of outreach education programs for elementary and middle school students.

Provides electronic benefits that can be used like cash to buy food at any store that has a sign displaying the Virginia Electronic Benefits Card or the Quest sign. Each eligible household will receive a card that may be used like a bank debit card to purchase eligible food items from your account.

For those facing financial hardship from unemployment, a family crisis, or a chronic medical condition, EnergyShare is Dominion's energy assistance program of last resort. There is no income guideline requirement, however, clients must have a disconnect notice. EnergyShare intake agencies determine eligibility for EnergyShare and may have additional requirements when qualifying customers for this program.

The Child Care Subsidy Program assists families in paying child care costs for children under age 13 who are not eligible to attend public school during the part of the day when public education is available, or children with special needs under age 18 who reside with the applicant. If you are eligible and are approved for services, the Subsidy Program can pay a portion of your child care costs directly to the child care provider.

Early Intervention services seek to intervene or reduce the incidence of mental illness and intellectual disabilities by enhancing protective factors for at-risk children and their families At-risk populations can access specialized services that offer positive behavioral skills training, counseling, education, tutoring, support and enrichment programs through contracts with Child Development Resources (CDR) and Infant and Toddler Connection.
