*Radiological & Nuclear** Although you cannot see or smell radiation, it can be detected using instruments specifically designed for that purpose. Experts use these instruments to monitor radiation in and around the North Anna and Surry power stations. Nuclear power stations are designed and built to prevent release of radiation. Should a nuclear incident occur, state health officials would monitor levels and advise the public about protective actions that may be needed. Emergency classifications There are four increasing levels of emergency warnings at nuclear power stations. Notification of Unusual Event: Lowest classification: a minor problem has been identified; no release of radioactive matter is expected; and there is no danger to the public. No special precautions are needed. Alert: A minor incident has occurred. Small amounts of radioactive matter could be released inside the station. There is no danger to the public, and no special precautions are needed. Site Area Emergency: A more serious incident has occurred, and it is possible that a small amount of radioactive matter could be released into the area immediately surrounding the station. Find a local radio or TV station that is broadcasting emergency information and listen for instructions. General Emergency: This is the most serious type of event. Radioactive matter could be released into the community. This level of emergency can pose a health risk to the public in the areas surrounding the power station, and state and local officials will take actions to protect the public. These protective actions may include an order to evacuate the area or shelter-in-place. If you are within ten miles of a nuclear power station, state officials will alert you via Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) message on your cellular phone, and call all publicly listed phones using the Virginia Public Notification System (VPNS). Turn to your local EAS radio or television stations to learn what actions you must take to protect yourself and your family. **Get a Kit** Having an emergency supply kit is essential to making it through a disaster safely. Make sure to have supplies on hand to last each person at least three days. Put these essential items in your kit: Food, at least a three-day supply of food that does not need electricity for storage or for preparation Manual can opener for food (if kit contains canned food) Water, at least three gallons per person for drinking and sanitation Battery-powered/hand-crank radio with weather band and extra batteries Written family emergency plan [on line form] Once you have the essentials you should add these items to your kit: Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities Flashlight and extra batteries First aid kit Whistle to signal for help Prescription medications and eyewear Dust mask, to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter where you are Sanitation supplies: moist towelettes, toilet paper, soap and plastic garbage bags Additional items to consider adding to an emergency supply kit: Items for infants and toddlers Items for pets Local maps Copies of important family documents, such as insurance policies, identification and bank account records in a waterproof, portable container Cash in small denominations or traveler's checks and change Emergency reference material such as a first aid book Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person (consider additional bedding if you live in a cold-weather climate) Complete change of clothing including a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, socks and sturdy shoes (consider additional layers if you live in a cold-weather climate) Household chlorine bleach and medicine dropper (when diluted in water, bleach can be used to kill germs) Fire Extinguisher Matches in a waterproof container Feminine supplies and personal hygiene
