The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria operate the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter, an open-admission facility accepting any and all animals brought to us from within the jurisdiction. AWLA have made a commitment to help animals in need with the help of the community.
AWLA care for more than 2,000 animals per year, including dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, iguanas and chinchillas. Specially-trained staff also assist area wildlife that have been injured or are in distress, with the ultimate goal of releasing them back into their natural habitat or transferring them to licensed wildlife rehabilitators for care and eventual release.

CHIP services, provided by a nurse and a home visitor team, include helping families make and keep appointments and follow physician recommendations, educational home visits, parenting education, helping families set and reach personal and family goals, transportation to medical and dental appointments, medical case management, and referrals to other community-based services to help meet the multifaceted needs of families. All services emphasize prevention and early intervention.
This is not the state CHIP insurance, but will help families access Medicaid or FAMIS (state CHIP insurance). Not a substance abuse/ mental health provider but can connect families to those resources.

This program provides a timely screening assessment for Medicaid or Medicaid eligible clients needing nursing home placement or services in the home or community. The target population for this program includes the elderly, disabled adults, or children needing a waiver for long-term placement or services for home-based care. Screenings are conducted in partnership with the Department of Social Services (DSS) and requests for screenings need to be made through DSS.
A nurse and a social worker screen the client to determine if they meet Medicaid's criteria for either (1) Functional capacity: the degree of assistance an individual needs to complete the activities of daily living (bathing, toileting, dressing) or (2) Medical or Nursing need (wound care). Services may include the following: in-home care, adult day care, or admission to a care facility. Referrals for screenings may be made through your local Health Department.
