Objective decesions rules classify individuals as chemically dependent or as not chemically dependent. Identify early-stage chemically dependent individuals who are either in denial or who are trying to conceal their chemical dependency. In addition to being used as a screening instrument, the SASSI-4 also provides clinical insights into a respondent's defensiveness and willingness to acknowledge experienced consequences of substance use disorder.

Residents and businesses in the city of Roanoke, the county of Roanoke and the town of Vinton generate 700 tons of waste every day. These valley localities have created the Roanoke Valley Resource Authority and joined forces with Norfolk Southern in an innovative public-private partnership to take out the trash. Each locality collects its own trash using its own equipment. After collection, refuse trucks deliver the trash to the Resource Authority's Tinker Creek Transfer Station where it is loaded into rail cars. At the end of the day trash is transported by rail to the Smith Gap Station.

Emergency Assistance provides short-term, limited financial assistance to individuals and families with children when a fire or other natural disaster has destroyed those things necessary for taking care of the household. EA may also be available to assist in a housing emergency if the person had no control over the circumstances of the emergency. Emergency Assistance payments can be made for shelter (for example rent, utilities, moving costs), or the repair or replacement of essential household items. The amount of assistance cannot be more than $500 in any 12-month period. Call 3-1-1 for information on the applicaiton process or to speak with a customer service representative. New River Community Action's Homeless and Housing Programs offer financial services to those at-risk of becoming homeless (Prevention) and those already homeless (Rapid Rehousing) to help them obtain or maintain permanent housing. Clients must meet strict grant criteria to receive financial services through Homeless and Housing Programs and adhere to program policies and guidelines for continuing services. When available, funding is used for participant financial assistance in the form of rent deposits and last month's rent, rent payments, utility deposits and utility arrears, utility payments, and application fees. The Resource Mother is a community health worker who develops a supportive mentoring relationship with the teen and her family. From the prenatal period through the infant’s first birthday, the resource mother provides health education; discusses ways to prevent infant injury; models daily living skills; encourages constructive decision making and life-planning; connects the teen to community resources; and provides guidance to assist the teen in making a successful transition to parenthood. The Resource Mother has weekly contact with the teen and her family. This program uses a two-generation or three-generation approach to serve target populations. Educational and support services are also available to other family members such as the partner, the teen's parents, and the infant.
