Facilities with this qualification are permitted to care for only those residents who are physically and mentally capable of self-preservation without the assistance of another person, even if the residents require the assistance of a wheelchair, walker, cane, prosthetic device or a single verbal command to evacuate the building.

The last day for applying is the second Friday in November. Main Qualifications: Have a heating need, meet the income and resource levels, include all persons living in the household, live in an eligible living arrangement and meet the citizenship requirements. Crisis Assistance applicants must meet the following: income level, resource level. Deposits: Opens the first working day in November. May only receive once per lifetime per fuel type. (Natural gas, electric and LP gas) Heating Equipment: Opens November 1st or the first working day in November for Replacement, purchase, or repair of primary heating source. Primary Fuel: Opens the first working day in January. It is for those that did not receive fuel assistance. Requires cut off notice for electric and gas. Almost out of fuel oil, wood, coal or island purchased kerosene. Cooling Assistance: Is offered during the beginning in mid-June. Must meet eligibility requirements

This program provides a timely screening assessment for Medicaid or Medicaid eligible clients needing nursing home placement or services in the home or community. The target population for this program includes the elderly, disabled adults, or children needing a waiver for long-term placement or services for home-based care. Screenings are conducted in partnership with the Department of Social Services (DSS) and requests for screenings need to be made through DSS. A nurse and a social worker screen the client to determine if they meet Medicaid's criteria for either (1) Functional capacity: the degree of assistance an individual needs to complete the activities of daily living (bathing, toileting, dressing) or (2) Medical or Nursing need (wound care). Services may include the following: in-home care, adult day care, or admission to a care facility. Referrals for screenings may be made through your local Health Department.
