The University of Mary Washington Small Business Development Center (UMWSBDC) is a resource center that provides assistance to the small business community and budding entrepreneurs via management training, industrial and demographic research, and confidential one-on-one consulting with a focus on capital access and management planning.

Ideally, at risk children should remain with their actual families whenever possible. Although foster care services offered by the state of Virginia make every effort to keep them together, it is not always possible. Once it is determined that a child must leave the family unit and go into foster care, a host of other services becomes available to them, which are designed to promote child safety and well being within a nurturing, family environment. This involves placing a child with a foster family, group home, residential children's facility or an independent living arrangement. Services are designed to help foster kids ages 14 through 21 to develop the skills necessary to transition from foster care to self sufficiency. Personal development skills such as self esteem, communication skills, decision making, conflict resolution, and anger management are emphasized. Physical or mental health treatment services often includes help with: *Substance abuse; *Depression; *Socialization; *Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder; *Nutritional deficiency; *Pregnancy; *Physical disabilities. Mentoring: *Providing good role models for parents; *Role modeling such as Big Brother/Big Sister programs; *Tutoring. Opportunity for a Permanent Living Situation: This involves fostering relationships between children and relatives or previous caregivers. For older youth leaving care this might include helping find an apartment or a roommate.

This office ensures that the city Emergency Operations Plan is reviewed and updated on a regular basis. In addition, staff who serve this function as a collateral duty, coordinate and attend monthly Regional Emergency Management meetings, attend state mandatory training for emergency coordinators, and maintains and updates the Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) and National Incident Management System (NIMS) compliance for the city. This office also receives materials from the Virginia Department of Emergency Management and distributes them to city and school departments, and maintains the city Emergency Operations Center (EOC) in a "ready condition" in case of an emergency.

Provides crisis phone counseling, emergency shelter, and advocacy to men, women and children who have been victims of abuse, domestic violence, sexual assault and rape. Public awareness and community education are offered. Personal articles and food may be provided to clients. 24 hour hot-line service also provided. Provides a juvenile and family matters court service unit that has jurisdiction over minors who have been charged with an offense, who have committed status offenses or traffic violations, or who have been neglected or physically or sexually abused. In addition, this court handles other matters involving the family such as custody, support and visitation. The court also hears family abuse cases, cases where adults have been accused of child abuse or neglect, and criminal cases where the defendant and alleged victim are family or household members.

The Virginia Bleeding Disorders Program is a legislatively enacted program through the Virginia Department of Health, Division of Child and Adolescent Health, for the care and treatment of persons with hemophilia and other inherited bleeding disorders. Virginia recognizes that the ongoing medical costs of treating such bleeding disorders often exceed the financial capacity of families, despite insurance coverage. The program supports a system of coordinated, family-oriented, multidisciplinary services for persons of all ages with bleeding disorders.
