Ensures that citizens are safe from animals, domestic and wild, and that animals are safe and properly cared for.Responsible for animal control within the city limits of Covington. Handles all calls for service concerning dogs at large, wild animals and other similar complainants. Animals captured by the Animal Control Officer are taken to the Alleghany Humane Society. Dogs are held at the shelter for 10 days then placed up for adoption to the public. Cats are picked up by the Animal Control Officer, and may be taken to the shelter. Cat can be taken to the shelter by individual citizens for a nominal fee. The shelter can be reached at 540-862-2436.

Provides phone and face-to-face intervention which includes crisis intervention; pre-screening for hospitalization; working with the legal, judicial, healthcare and other referral sources; and securing inpatient beds or alternative services.

Provides a residential facility for people with developmental disabilities. Services provided in the facility include organizational elements which include residential cottages, communication, community and social services, cosmetology, education, occupational therapy, physical therapy, primary nursing, psychology, recreation and leisure, vocational training and employment, and volunteer services.

The Child Advocacy Center (CAC) program provides a safe place where kids and teenagers talk about things that have happened to them. The CAC brings together a Multi-Disciplinary Team of police, social workers, therapists, medical teams, advocates and lawyers to investigate reports of abuse or crimes against kids.

Circuit Court for Roanoke City within the 23th Judicial Circuit of Virginia. The circuit court is the trial court with the broadest powers in Virginia. Handles all civil cases with claims of more than $15,000. Shares authority with the general district court to hear matters involving claims between $4,500 and $15,000. Authorized to hear serious criminal cases called felonies. Handles family matters, including divorce. Hears cases appealed from the general district court and from the juvenile and domestic relations district court.

WIC stands for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children. The goal of the program is to improve the health of pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding women, infants and children (under 5 years) through better nutrition and access to health care. The program is funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture and operated in Virginia through the Virginia Department of Health. The program provides screening and referrals to other health, welfare and social service agencies, nutrition education, breastfeeding promotion and support as well as supplemental nutritious foods. To be eligible for the WIC Program, applicants must meet categorical, residential, income and nutrition risk requirements.

As a K-12 school, Dooley School primarily serves students diagnosed with emotional disabilities, specific learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disabilities and other health impairments. Staff-to-student ratio ranges from 1:6 to 1:8 depending on disabilities being served in the classroom. Local school systems place students with Dooley School to help address academic and behavioral challenges. Counselors on staff help students develop self-esteem, learn how to build relationships and be successful in their community.

FEES: Members are paid mileage and a flat fee per meeting; however, each member must bear the expense to travel to the sites. Serves as a temporary source of supervised credit and technical support to rural Americans for improving their farming enterprises and housing conditions until they are able to qualify for private sector resources. Administers the following programs: Farm Loans, Price Support, Commodities, Conservation and Disaster Assistance. Serves the Counties of Louisa, Fluvanna, Albemarle, Goochland, Nelson and the City of Charlottesville.

Deaf and Hard of Hearing Specialist can provide training to persons who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing and their families and training to businesses, nonprofits, and professionals that serve persons who have a hearing loss. Responds to request for information and referrals on niche topics related to hearing loss including, but not limited to, where to find sign language classes, support services, assistive technology, and more. Specialist promote public awareness about services via exhibits at local-regional events. Specialist assist clients with their telecommunication needs including applications, assessments, installation, training and troubleshooting specialized telecommunication equipment.

Works to end the criminalization of poverty in Virginia by exposing and addressing criminal legal system policies that target people because of poverty and race. Through a mix of community organizing, local and statewide policy advocacy, and litigation, our program intervenes at many points in the criminal legal system. Our campaigns range from initial law enforcement contact in the community, through the courts, to individuals' confinement in Virginia's jails and prisons, and finally to their reentry into the community.

Norton City Schools is comprised of two schools. Norton Elementary and Middle School houses students in grades Pre-K through 7 and a special needs Pre-K program. John I. Burton High School includes traditional education and Dual Enrollment opportunities through cooperation with Mountain Empire Community College and the University of Virginia's College for students in grades 8 through twelve.

Latinos in Virginia Empowerment Center provides victims of violence and their families with services that respond to their emotional, physical, and cultural needs in order to help them to become healthy and sufficient. These services include peer counseling, case management, personal advocacy and accompaniment services, emergency shelter, housing, and emergency financial assistance.

Provide at minimum, the following: 1:1 Support, Behavior Modification, Informal counseling services, Provide Behavioral Intervention Strategies, provide assistance to educators regarding the student's behaviors, for those receiving Special Education Services, specialized instruction is provided to the student requiring behavioral support accordance with his/ her IEP and open communication skills regarding barriers

Provides administration of the Bath County public school programs. Programs include education, special education programs, counseling, social work, and a school health program.

General District Court

Provides a bag of groceries along with bread, some produce and some weeks, meat, once a week to assist families facing emergencies. The food pantry is located in Fr. Ray Hall.

Offers used clothing and household items at nominal prices for infants through adults. Arranges free clothing for the needy by referral from nonprofit or government social service agencies or sponsoring congregations.
