The Amelia County Department of Emergency Management (DEM) coordinates efforts to ensure that the County is able to mitigate, prepare for, respond to and recover from any type of natural or man-caused disaster. Piedmont Senior Resources contracts with the Virginia Legal Aid Society (VLAS) in Farmville to provide free civil legal services to area senior citizens. The attorneys and elderly services paralegal at VLAS can assist older persons with legal problems in the areas of Medicare/Medicaid, Social Security and SSI, SNAP and other public benefits, housing, family abuse, and advance directives.

Provide financial assistance for rent, mortgage and utilities to families facing unforeseen difficulties.

Habitat for Humanity uses tax-deductible donations of money and materials and volunteer labor to build or rehab homes in partnership with families who face significant challenges in becoming homeowners. Partner families are qualified based on their need for housing, their ability to pay for a mortgage, and their willingness to provide "sweat equity" volunteer labor. The family then purchases the home with a reduced rate mortgage and affordable terms for payment.

Investigates reports of abuse, neglect, and exploitation of adults 60 years of age or older and incapacitated adults age 18 or older. If protective services are needed and accepted by the individual, local Adult Protective Services social workers may arrange for a wide variety of health, housing, social and legal services to stop the mistreatment or prevent further mistreatment. Services offered may include home based care, transportation, adult day services, adult foster care, nutrition services and legal intervention in order to protect the adult. Services may also be arranged for individuals in emergency situations who lack the capacity to consent to services.

The Department of Social Services provides adoption services for foster children who become legally free to be adopted by another family. Services include preparing the child to become a part of another family, selecting the adoptive family, and facilitating the transition into the home. The Department also provides adoptive home studies and recommendations to the Court for step-parent and parental placement adoptions.

Provides obstetric and gynological care for women. Augusta Health Care for Women is comprised of both male and female physicians, certified nurse midwives, and a nurse practitioner. Offers offices in both Lexington and Fishersville. Each patient is managed by the individual service provider they choose, but even when a specific provider is absent, the patients are confident in all personnel because all of our medical providers address our patients with consistent service and compassion. An auxiliary grant is a supplement to income for recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and certain other aged individuals who are blind, or disabled residing in a licensed assisted living facility or an approved adult foster care home. Anyone interested in volunteering is encouraged to contact the agency to discuss which position best fits his/her skills and interests. Training will be provided for each position.

ReStore is a resale business that sells new and used building materials and home improvement items to the general public. All materials are donated by local retail businesses, building contractors, suppliers and individuals, and are made available for sale to the public at 50% to 90% below retail prices.

Foster Care Program provides homes and compassionate foster parents for children who are removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect, or other family circumstances that prevent children from remaining in their homes.
