Provides assistance to individuals and families struggling with an unexpected crisis or homelessness. Housing and budget counseling are major components of this assistance to help each client develop goals to work toward self-sufficiency. Financial assistance may include: rents and rental deposits and utility deposits and payments. Provides financial assistance to clients experiencing some kind of short-term crisis beyond their control, such as a serious accident, illness or injury; an unexpected job layoff, termination or reduction in hours; a loss of daycare or transportation that has affected a client's ability to work; or a delay in approved benefits.

A full service, year-round, residential transitional homeless shelter providing transformative supports to help clients/residents achieve sucess with employment and sustainable housing. The Brisben Center maintains full-time living quarters for up to 60 people: families with children and single adults.

FRIENDS' Community Service (FCS) provides an alternative to incarceration for non-violent juveniles. Youth between the ages of 13 and 17 are court-ordered or referred to FCS to perform as little as 10 or as many as 100 community service hours. The goal of the program is to hold teenage offenders responsible for their behavior and teach them how to make better choices. Friends of the Portsmouth Juvenile Court has partnered with several local organizations that serve as work sites. These sites allow teenagers referred to the program to complete community service hours at their facility. In many cases, volunteers are used to supervise the teenage offenders.

Provides advocacy, school enrollment and transfer assistance, information and referral, coordination of transportation and school supplies for all homeless school-aged children and youth. Coordinates and/or supports tutoring programs at local shelters. This is a local program of the Homeless Office for Programs in Education (Project HOPE) coordinated at the state level by the College of William & Mary, Virginia Homeless Education Coordinator.

Provides Family Access to Medical Insurance Program (FAMIS). Provides health coverage for children who have not had any health insurance coverage for 6 months. Designed to cover children of working VA families who make too much money to qualify for Medicaid and too little to afford private health insurance. Offers emergency services to military personnel and their families. This is a Statewide 24/7 call center which will ensure all calls are answered by a live person and will be forwarded to the proper channels.

Volunteers provide in-person or virtual friendly visiting; transportation to the grocery store, medical appointments, and general errands; intermittent respite to full time caregivers; technology assistance; and assist with household tasks and seasonal yard work. Volunteers may also help in Fairfax county senior or adult day health centers. The Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program volunteers advocate for residents of long-term care facilities. The Virginia Insurance Counseling and Assistance Program (VICAP) assists residents with Medicare issues. Fairfax Pets on Wheels volunteers along with their pet, visit residents of nursing facilities and adult day health care centers.

Jones Memorial Library is a research library and archive with collections in genealogy and local history. We collect, organize, preserve and make available materials for research on genealogy and the history of the Lynchburg area. The library is free and open to researchers some services such as photocopying of materials may incur a fee. Materials do not circulate and are available for use in the library.
