Provides a palliative care program for care of patients and families dealing with terminal illness (usually 6 month prognosis). Interdisciplinary holistic approach with focus on home care support. Provides bereavement follow up with the family for a 13 month period. Services Provided include: * Physician provides medical direction of the patient care. * Registered nurses make regularly scheduled home visits to assess the patient condition, provide pain and symptom management, answer questions, and teach patient and families how to manage and provide care. * Hospice helpline provides a 24 hour a day, 7 days a week phone access to a registered nurse. Besides regularly scheduled home visits, by calling the helpline you can speak by phone to a nurse who is able to answer questions and assess unexpected situations. * Medications related to the hospice diagnosis and used for pain and symptom management are provided. * Medical equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers, hospital bed are provided as needed. * Home Care Aides provide personal care and light housekeeping for the patient. * Medical social workers assess the psychosocial needs of the patient/family. They provide education and support regarding interpersonal relationships, and are experts in community resources. This allows them to facilitate family communication and recommend resources for financial, legal and caregiving issues. * Chaplain provides spiritual support to patients and families of all faiths. * Support therapies Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapy and dietary counseling provide expert services as needed. * Pharmacist provide expertise in pain and symptom management. * Volunteers are a specially trained group of people who are available to provide supportive services to patients, families and hospice staff. * Bereavement services provide grief follow up according to the needs of the families. This includes phone contacts, supportive literature, mailings and an invitation to the annual memorial service. Grief support groups and individual counseling are available through Sentara Grief Support Services. No person will be denied Sentara Hospice services on the basis of race, color, national origin, handicap, age or inability to pay.

The Journey of Hope support group brings together individuals who have lost loved ones throughout the community. This special support group is coordinated by caring hospice professionals. Groups meet at scheduled times in each of our hospice communities. They offer support, guidance and understanding to help you cope with your loss.

Offers non-medical assistance for those living with a life threatening illness and for those who love them. Provides in home and out of the home services. In home services include respite for caregivers; volunteer assistance with transportation to medical appointments and other hands on help; loaning of equipment and supplies; spiritual care and support from a Chaplain; and a library. Hospice house provides a home away from home for patients and caregivers. 24 hour care provided by trained staff is also provided. Various support groups are available for patients, caregivers and members of the community.

The Compassionate Friends (TCF) is a national self-help bereavement organization for families going through the natural grieving process after the death of a child. We welcome all bereaved parents (and guardians), grandparents, and adult siblings regardless of the age of the child who died or the cause of death.

Weekly sessions run for 8 weeks and combine education and group activities for discussion. Class is held four times per year. Pre-registration is required. Hope & Hot Chocolate - Held throughout the holiday season to help bereaved persons cope effectively with the demands of the holidays. Women and Men's Lunch Groups - An opportunity for those who have experienced the loss of a spouse or partner to get together for casual lunch and conversation. Call for meeting places/dates/times for Roanoke and NRV locations. Puzzle Pieces - Drop-in support group for bereaved persons interested in understanding grief better and being able to talk with others dealing with loss. The group is facilitated by hospice staff who help group members identify where they are in their own grief journey and gain new insights or coping tools. Knitty Gritty Grief Group - This grief support group combines knitting and crocheting and grief support. It allows each member to share their loss in a safe and compassionate environment while providing support through therapeutic interaction. After completing a project (e.g. prayer shawl, lap blanket, etc.), each member may keep their knitting or donate it to a hospice patient.

This program links families of fallen Airmen and Guardians to their Air Force family. Long-term survivor aftercare program established to provide support to family members of deceased Regular Air Force and Reserve Component Airmen and Guardians who died in an Active Duty, Inactive Duty for Training (IDT), or Annual Training (AT) status.

Gives grieving children and teens (ages 4-18) the opportunity to be with others their age who are also experiencing significant loss, guided by skilled staff. Offers bereavement day camps each year. Through these camps and the on-going support groups, children discover that they are not alone and their feelings are normal. Seasonal camp activities may include art therapy, horseback riding, rope challenge courses, swimming, a petting zoo, hiking, games, a closing memorial ceremony, and more. Parents and guardians are encouraged to participate in a support group and memorial ceremony at each seasonal camp.

Provides full range of behavioral health services including Inpatient Mental Health Unit, Partial Hospitalization Program, Outpatient Appointments for Individual, Family and Group Therapy.
