Counseling-Guidance - North Tazewell, Project Discovery, Clinch Valley Community Action

Project Discovery works with middle and high school students in Tazewell County providing workshops & activities in career exploration and college preparation, cultural and recreation events, and visits to colleges and universities. Students must be first-generation college students to be eligible to participate. A new community initiative is our College Fair. The Fair hosts representatives from the following colleges, universities and other post-secondary opportunities: Bluefield University, Bluefield State University, Concord University, Old Dominion University, East Tennessee State University, Tusculum University, Wytheville Community College, King University, University of Virginia, Southwest Virginia Community College, National Guard and Tri-County Driving Academy. This one-day event allows high school students to learn about available opportunities and options to continue their education.

Provides academic assistance to eligible high school students who show promise for success in education beyond high school The Program is offered to ninth through twelfth grade students who reside in Norfolk and Portsmouth. Selected students shall show potential for success in a two or four-year college, but because of inadequate educational preparation, admission to such an institute would be difficult without the benefit of Upward Bound.

The Upward Bound Program at WCC is a college prep program designed to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from college. The Upward Bound program serves 57 high school students in grades 9 through 12 from George Wythe High School, Rural Retreat High School, Ft Chiswell High School, Carroll County High School, Galax High School, and Marion Senior High School.

Offers diagnostic and remedial services for children with reading difficulties. A full reading diagnosis is conducted every M & T periodically during the academic year. In addition, interviews are held with parents to establish history and case background. Instruction is on a one-to-one basis. Does not offer direct tutor services, but maintains list of available tutors.

Tutoring/Guidance Counseling - Chesapeake, Upward Bound, Tidewater Community College

Program offered to high school students from low-income families and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelors degree. During the academic year, students receive personal and academic counseling, tutorial assistance, supplemental instruction, as well as cultural and social enrichment experiences. A Summer Academy at the Chesapeake Campus provides students the opportunity to experience campus life while attending classes. The highlight of the summer program is a major cultural and educational field trip.

Awards scholarships to spouses of Uniformed Services members (active duty, National Guard and Reserve, retirees, and survivors) to obtain professional certification or to attend post secondary or graduate school. NMFA scholarships are one-time/year awards averaging between $500 - $2500. The amount can depend on our donors and your educational or professional need. The average amount awarded is $1000 and the number awarded each year varies depending on funding. Scholarship funds may be used for tuition, fees, and school room and board.
