Recipients receive education, breast-feeding support, nutritional screening, and specific foods for free. Free foods include milk, baby formula, eggs, dried beans, peanut butter, cheese, juice, and cereal. WIC stands for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children. The goal of the program is to improve the health of pregnant, postpartum and breast-feeding women, infants and children (under 5 years) through better nutrition and access to health care. The program is funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture and operated in Virginia through the Virginia Department of Health. The program provides screening and referrals to other health, welfare and social service agencies, nutrition education, breast-feeding promotion and support as well as supplemental nutritious foods. To be eligible for the WIC Program, applicants must meet categorical, residential, income and nutrition risk requirements.

The center takes calls for and dispatches the Amherst County Sheriff's Office, Amherst Town Police, Amherst Fire Department, Amherst Life Saving Crew, Monelison Fire and Rescue Department, Pedlar Fire, Amherst County Animal Control. Even though the Amherst County 911 Center has multiple functions, there are two primary job functions within the Communications Center. 1. Receiving Incoming Calls. When a telephone call is received by the Center either via 911 or on a non-emergency line, the telecommunicater collects the information from the caller. 2. Dispatching The Call. The operator then dispatches the call to the appropriate agency or agencies.
