Provides the following Environmental Health Services: Complaints Environmental Health documents and investigates residents' complaints about environmental health problems, including reports of food and waterborne disease, mosquito problems, improper sewage disposal, and other public health issues. Food Services Local health department staff inspect and issue required permits to such food service establishments as school cafeterias, restaurants, food stands at community events, camps, day care centers, B&B's, and migrant camps. They work with those who provide prepared food to the public to help assure that food is wholesome and healthy. The local health department is responsible for working with local dairies to assure a healthy product, free of disease. This is done through regular inspections and ongoing input into dairy operations. Drinking Water Environmental health staff provides assistance to property owners who have or desire to have private wells on their property. They assist with required activities and issue, upon proper documentation and payment of fees, permits for private on-site wells. Each county health department maintains records on properties with private on-site wells. Sewage Disposal Environmental health staff provides assistance to residents who desire to or already have on-site sewage disposal systems on their own or their rented property. This assistance includes providing the activities, referral and documentation necessary to obtain required permits for on-site sewage disposal. Each county health department maintains records on properties with on-site sewage disposal systems.

A permanent supportive housing program serving eight men who experienced chronic homelessness. With assistance offered eight hours per day, residents access advocacy, case management, employment assistance, rental subsidy, and other supportive services.

WIC stands for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children. The goal of the program is to improve the health of pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding women, infants and children (under 5 years) through better nutrition and access to health care. The program provides screening and referrals to other health, welfare and social service agencies, nutrition education, breastfeeding promotion and support as well as supplemental nutritious foods.

Identifies gaps in services to older adults and their family caregivers and designs programs in coordination with citizens, public/private agencies, the Commission on Aging and the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. Provides technical assistance, tracks long-term care legislation, and participates in the Northern Virginia Aging Network.

Health Department programs and services help to prevent the spread of the HIV virus in the community by identifying illness, providing linkage to treatment, and taking actions to prevent the spread of disease.

CancerLINC connects cancer patients and their families to legal, financial, and community resources to solve the non-medical obstacles that arise with a cancer diagnosis. CancerLINC addresses issues often experienced by patients such as: medical debt, life planning legal documents, employment issues, insurance denials, housing insecurity, community resource support and more. CancerLINC services are always free and the professional services provided by volunteers are free of charge to patients who live below the Federally-defined poverty level. ThisABILITY is dedicated to serving children and adults with disabilities in the community. For those facing financial hardship from unemployment, a family crisis, or a chronic medical condition, EnergyShare is Dominion's energy assistance program of last resort. Those under age 60 must have a disconnect notice (those age 60 or older do not need a disconnect notice). EnergyShare is a Salvation Army program which determines eligibility for EnergyShare and may have additional requirements when qualifying customers for this program. Program is active only when funds are available. Valid ID and income verification is required.

Provides information and advice on cable TV services available in Fairfax County. Responds to complaints regarding cable television and telecommunications construction, restoration and technical problems. Oversees the County's non-exclusive cable television franchise agreements with Cox Communications, Comcast, and Verizon, through enforcement of franchise agreements, inspection of facilities, and attention to resident concerns.

United Way of Southwest Virginia has developed the Southwest Virginia Regional Disaster Response Fund to serve as a financial resource to provide immediate assistance in the aftermath of natural or humanitarian disasters. The primary purpose of these funds is to ensure that resources are available at the onset of disaster, allowing United Way to mobilize quickly and effectively for our region.

Foster care is intended to be a temporary rather than a long-term solution for children who have been removed from their birth family homes for reasons of neglect, abuse, abandonment, or other issues endangering their health and/or safety. Every effort is made to help the child remain with his or her family, however, when a child comes into foster care they are most often placed in a foster home. The foster family works as a team with the local department of social services, the biological family, the child (when applicable) and any additional community partners.
