Works to end the criminalization of poverty in Virginia by exposing and addressing criminal legal system policies that target people because of poverty and race. Through a mix of community organizing, local and statewide policy advocacy, and litigation, our program intervenes at many points in the criminal legal system. Our campaigns range from initial law enforcement contact in the community, through the courts, to individuals' confinement in Virginia's jails and prisons, and finally to their reentry into the community.

Project LINK offers services to women and children whose lives have been negatively affected by substance use. This may include the woman’s own substance use, her partner’s use, or use by a family member. Priority services are given to women who are currently pregnant, parenting, or seeking to regain custody. The program provides comprehensive, individualized, family-focused, gender specific case management services.

This program provides training for person age 55 and older in new job skills and finding full or part-time employment. Capacity is 17 enrollees at one time. Clients are assigned to non profit agencies for work experience and train 20 hours per week. Training wages are equivalent to the federal minimum wage.

Offers pregnancy options counseling including information about abortion and alternatives. Healthy Families provides voluntary, comprehensive home-visiting services that support at-risk expectant and new parents and help prevent poor childhood outcomes. Home visits are activity-based and focus on a variety of topics including healthy family functioning, family goal planning, maternal and child health, positive parenting strategies, child development, and school readiness. Home visitors also provide families with referrals to a wide array of community resources.

Transforms pounds of surplus food donated by area food service businesses (restaurants, hotels, university cafeterias, caterers, etc.) into nutritious meals and delivers these meals daily to partner agencies in the Washington metropolitan area, including homeless shelters, rehabilitation clinics, adult education programs, and after school programs.

Provides emergency communications between service members and their families, information and referral when a problem is beyond the scope of the Red Cross, and, in coordination with the military and societies, financial assistance in emergency situations, such as the need for emergency travel or when a pay problem is encountered. In addition to Service to military families, we also provide international tracing and social services. This includes seeking family members separated by war or natural disaster, or families separated during the Holocaust, and the sending of Red Cross letters between family members when normal communications have been disrupted.

TAP VITA Tax Clinic provides free tax preparation to help people in Roanoke, VA, and surrounding areas access valuable tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit. TAP VITA Tax Clinic is in partnership with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Virginia CASH Campaign operated through the Virginia Community Action Partnership (VACAP). You must meet program eligibility for assistance.
