Southwestern Virginia Mental Health Institute (SWVMHI) is a 179-bed state psychiatric institute operated by the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS). The Institute serves adult and geriatric individuals. SWVMHI is the primary state psychiatric hospital for individuals located in Health Planning District III, far southwestern Virginia. Southwestern Virginia Mental Health Institute is accredited by The Joint Commission. and is eligible to receive third-party payments, including Medicare, Medicaid, and Champus.

Piedmont provides services to persons who are 65 years or older, who are in need of inpatient treatment for mental illness. They must meet the requirements for voluntary or involuntary admission as determined by their mental health center, and do not have a medical condition that requires priority treatment in an acute care hospital.
