Recruit, train, and supervise competent volunteers dedicated toward representing the needs of children in juvenile dependency proceedings.

Volunteers provide in-person or virtual friendly visiting; transportation to the grocery store, medical appointments, and general errands; intermittent respite to full time caregivers; technology assistance; and assist with household tasks and seasonal yard work. Volunteers may also help in Fairfax county senior or adult day health centers. The Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program volunteers advocate for residents of long-term care facilities. The Virginia Insurance Counseling and Assistance Program (VICAP) assists residents with Medicare issues. Fairfax Pets on Wheels volunteers along with their pet, visit residents of nursing facilities and adult day health care centers.

Recruits and trains community volunteers to serve as court advocates for abused and neglected children. Volunteers conduct independent investigations, submit reports and recommendations to the court and monitor the child's case to assure services are provided and court orders are being followed. Volunteer advocates also promote and support safe, permanent and nurturing homes for child victims before the courts of the 16th Judicial District of Virginia. Offers daytime, afternoon, occasional weekend, and seasonal volunteer opportunities lasting from one hour to four hours. Opportunities include but are not limited to: tutoring youth, tutoring adults in English as a 2nd Language, helping in the Thrift Store and food pantry, picking up food donations, and assisting LCAC educational opportunities for the families served. Provide one-on-one and small group tutoring in basic reading, writing, math, English, computers/technology, personal finances, citizenship, and immigration tutoring. Local partners for Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, coordinate the Winchester Little Libraries that provide free books as well as leading the Campaign for Grade-level Reading.

Offers opportunities for volunteers to work with people with Alzheimer's or other memory impairment. Training is provided. Sample volunteer activities include assisting people during an activity, engaging participants one-on-one (playing cards, helping with a puzzle, etc.) helping serve and distribute lunch, bringing in pets for pet therapy sessions, and set-up or assist with parties or celebrations. New River Community Action works with numerous citizen groups to develop and implement agency programs. Volunteers who serve on the agency Board of Directors as well as various program Advisory Councils work in partnership with the staff. Volunteers in the Foster Grandparents Program (FGP) are role models and mentors to children who need additional support. The program provides a way for volunteers - age 55 and over - to stay active by serving children and youth in their communities.
