Volunteers provide in-person or virtual friendly visiting; transportation to the grocery store, medical appointments, and general errands; intermittent respite to full time caregivers; technology assistance; and assist with household tasks and seasonal yard work. Volunteers may also help in Fairfax county senior or adult day health centers. The Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program volunteers advocate for residents of long-term care facilities. The Virginia Insurance Counseling and Assistance Program (VICAP) assists residents with Medicare issues. Fairfax Pets on Wheels volunteers along with their pet, visit residents of nursing facilities and adult day health care centers.

Offers opportunities for volunteers to work with people with Alzheimer's or other memory impairment. Training is provided. Sample volunteer activities include assisting people during an activity, engaging participants one-on-one (playing cards, helping with a puzzle, etc.) helping serve and distribute lunch, bringing in pets for pet therapy sessions, and set-up or assist with parties or celebrations. Recruits and trains community volunteers to serve as court advocates for abused and neglected children. Volunteers conduct independent investigations, submit reports and recommendations to the court and monitor the child's case to assure services are provided and court orders are being followed. Volunteer advocates also promote and support safe, permanent and nurturing homes for child victims before the courts of the 16th Judicial District of Virginia. ACCESSIBILITY: Not accessible to persons with disabilities.

Provides trained and screened volunteers matched to persons with visual impairments requesting assistance with reading, shopping, recording material onto tape at mutually agreeable hours. Adult volunteers are required to complete a volunteer application with reference checks and participate in an orientation session.
