Project Discovery - Danville, Pittsylvania County Community Action

Project Discovery is school drop-out prevention, college access preparatory program serving economically disadvantaged and first generation college students. The program is designed to promote education as a means to ending the cycle of poverty for current and future generations of students. Students attend various informative workshops designed to stimulate interest in attending and graduating colleges and or preparatory schools. Workshops include: Goal Setting Study Skills Self Esteem Choosing a Career Choosing a College College Life Criteria for Admission to Colleges Financial Aid Project Discovery assist students and their families to provide them with the following services: Obtain information and guidance on how to choose a college How to find financial aid and scholarships How to make the transition into college life Visit a variety of college campuses to get a true picture of the college experience Interact with professors and administrators from various colleges Students get free SAT, ACT, and college fee waivers to assist them in their finances Project Discovery works within the school system with superintendent, principals, teachers, and guidance counselors Participating Schools Dan River High School Tunstall High School Chatham High School Gretna High School

Empowering adolescents with factual, medical, age-appropriate knowledge and skills that will assist them as they navigate life by making good choices, developing healthy relationships, and embracing personal responsibility. Students will learn age-appropriate information about 1) human sexuality, 2) developing and understanding their values and attitudes about sexuality, 3) healthy relationships and interpersonal skills, 4) Human Trafficking, 5) responsible screen time - social media/internet safety and 6 ) how to exercise responsibility regarding sexual relationships, including addressing abstinence, contraception, and risks associated with sexual intercourse.

Youth Development - Roanoke, Family Service of Roanoke Valley

Positive Action is for elementary students to focus on "feeling good" about themselves. Project Aim is for ages 11-14 and provides them with the motivation to make safe choices to address deeper barriers to sexual risk prevention such as hopelessness, poverty, and risk opportunities in low-income environments. The children and youth who participate in these programs develop self-esteem, learn to make wise choices for themselves and focus on the importance of others. The TOP (Teen Outreach Program), is an evidence based national program using leadership development classes and community service learning to lead teens toward productive decisions and positive behaviors. Leadership development topics include: self esteem, communication, values, goal setting, decision making, conflict resolution, relationships, and health education. This program takes place at 13 different partner locations and is for middle and high school students.

Mentoring - Roanoke, Project Discovery of Virginia

A post-secondary access program currently offered through 24 Partner Agencies throughout Virginia in grades four to twelve. Project Discovery encourages students to stay in and graduate high school and provides resources and tools for students to successfully make the transition to post-secondary education. This is the central administrative office for this program. Project Discovery is a proven and replicable program that will help any student succeed in high school and get into college. Over the last 11 years over 84% of our graduates have gone on to post secondary education. YEL-J4K is a Food Desert Solution that incorporates Food Desert residents into our Solution! We're Keeping Kids Off the Streets and Raising our next Generation of CEOs and Entrepreneurs!
