Elderly and disabled adults who are unable to protect themselves from abuse, neglect, and exploitation are eligible for our services, regardless of income. Adult protective services investigates reports of abuse, neglect and exploitation of adults over the age of 60 or incapacitated adults over the age of 18.
Protects elderly and impaired adults from abuse, neglect, and exploitation. Enables adults to remain in the least restrictive setting, by assessing the needs of the individual and providing or arranging for service delivery. Adult protective services are designed to establish and/or strengthen appropriate family and social supports in order to protect adults at-risk.

It also includes assessment of service needs, determining whether the subject of the report is in need of protective services, documenting the need for protective services, specifying what services are needed, and providing or arranging for services. Services to adults whose situations do not allege abuse, neglect, or exploitation or the risk of abuse, neglect or exploitation are provided under the adult services definition and handled as such.

Adult Protective Services
Investigates reports of abuse, neglect, and exploitation of adults sixty years of age or older and incapacitated adults age eighteen or older. If protective services are needed and accepted by the individual, local Adult Protective Services (APS) social workers may arrange for a wide variety of health, housing, social and legal services to stop the mistreatment or prevent further mistreatment. Services offered may include home-based care, transportation, adult day services, adult foster care, nutrition services, and legal intervention in order to protect the adult. Services may also be arranged for individuals in emergency situations who lack the capacity to consent to services. Emergencies after 4:30pm will be taken by Botetourt County Sheriff's Department at 540-473-8631. The dispatcher will page the on call social worker for child or adult protective services response only. Adult Protective Services (APS) is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to receive and investigate reports of abuse, neglect, and exploitation regarding persons 60 years or older and adults who are 18 or older and who are incapacitated. Intervention, APS services, and adult services are provided based on assessment.

Services include mobilizing the extended family, assisting in shopping and meal preparation, assisting in the Court appointment of a guardian for an incompetent adult, and referring the client to other resources.
