The Virginia Preschool Initiative provides preschool education, health services, family engagement, facilitation of comprehensive services including health, mental health and nutrition education for preschool children and their families.

Program offered promotes school readiness by serving families of economically-disadvantaged children with educational, health, nutritional, social and other services.

HCPS preschool students gain literacy and other skills using a developmentally appropriate, hands-on curriculum, including a focus on phonemic awareness; language enrichment; letters and sounds; decoding and beginning reading and writing; numeracy with a focus on numbers and number sense; and social and emotional development.

Operates two program types; Early Head Start and Head Start. 1) Early Head Start serves pregnant women and infants to 36 months of age. 2) Head Start serves children 3 years old to school age. Two program options for each program type; Home based services and center based services. Pregnant women are only served in our home based option. Center based services provide all the EHS and HS services to children ages one month to school age in a group setting. Early Head Start operates year round programs. In Head Start, offers both full year and part year (operate Aug; May) options. Waiting lists are maintained for all program options. Eligibility is base on family income. Child care/Development Center & Preschool.

Families of 4 year old children who meet Federal income guidelines and live in designated attendance zones may be eligible. Center based program services are available for specified school attendance areas. Families should contact the Head Start office for more information regarding eligibility and registration. Center Based - pre-school program operating five days a week at designated sites. Eleven classrooms located on site of the following schools: Bellwood, Bensely, Chalkley, Ettrick, AM Davis, Falling Creek, Harrowgate, Hopkins and Elizabeth Scott.
