The Virginia Cancer Registry (VCR) is the state's cancer surveillance program. By state law, VCR receives reports of cancer from hospitals, clinics, independent pathology laboratories, and physicians. Information VCR collects describes the burden of cancer in Virginia. VCR supports programs and organizations statewide to promote cancer prevention, early detection, and successful treatment and care. The registry publishes statistical summaries of cancer incidence, responds to requests for information, and educates citizens, cancer professionals, and organizations around the state about cancer.

The district offers assistance and refers clients who have been exposed to tuberculosis for chest x-rays, follow-up and medicines as needed. Sexually transmitted diseases can be treated at the clinics, free of charge. Free confidential HIV testing and counseling also is available. Communicable disease investigation, surveillance and control is a district service. The district is actively involved in disaster planning, including possible bio terrorist events and conducts investigations of suspected food and water borne outbreaks, conducts surveillance and provides guidance for rabies exposure.

Oxford House is a network of self-run, self-supported recovery homes for members recovering from alcohol and substance abuse. When an individual is accepted for membership in an Oxford House, there is no time limit on how long he or she can live there, but the use of alcohol or drugs or non-payment of rent will result in expulsion. There is no clean time required to move into an Oxford House.
