The Child Welfare Unit is responsible for the recruitment, approval, and re-evaluation of foster care homes. Sponsors recreational activities for persons with developmental disabilities.

This program provides a timely screening assessment for Medicaid or Medicaid eligible clients needing nursing home placement or services in the home or community. The target population for this program includes the elderly, disabled adults, or children needing a waiver for long-term placement or services for home-based care. Screenings are conducted in partnership with the Department of Social Services (DSS) and requests for screenings need to be made through DSS. A nurse and a social worker screen the client to determine if they meet Medicaid's criteria for either (1) Functional capacity: the degree of assistance an individual needs to complete the activities of daily living (bathing, toileting, dressing) or (2) Medical or Nursing need (wound care). Services may include the following: in-home care, adult day care, or admission to a care facility. Referrals for screenings may be made through your local Health Department.

Transportation is covered by Medicaid when you do not have another way to get to your doctor appointment or other Medicaid services. It is available for Medicaid members who are part of our managed care health plans as well as members in our fee-for-service program. Your member ID card lists the phone number to call for transportation.

Martinsville Adult Education Program provides comprehensive services to learners 18 years of age or older who are not enrolled in a K-12 school. The Home Repair for the Elderly Program is designed to provide minor home repairs and/or accessibility modifications to eligible low- and moderate-income elderly homeowners and individuals living with disabilities for homes in which they are currently residing. Fairfax County will provide a crew to do up to one week's worth of labor and provide up to $1000 in materials to complete necessary repairs. Income restrictions apply.

Each eligible household will receive a card that may be used like a bank debit card to purchase eligible food items from your account.

Provides the following Environmental Health Services: Complaints Environmental Health documents and investigates residents' complaints about environmental health problems, including reports of food and waterborne disease, mosquito problems, improper sewage disposal, and other public health issues. Food Services Local health department staff inspect and issue required permits to such food service establishments as school cafeterias, restaurants, food stands at community events, camps, day care centers, B&B's, and migrant camps. They work with those who provide prepared food to the public to help assure that food is wholesome and healthy. The local health department is responsible for working with local dairies to assure a healthy product, free of disease. This is done through regular inspections and ongoing input into dairy operations. Drinking Water Environmental health staff provides assistance to property owners who have or desire to have private wells on their property. They assist with required activities and issue, upon proper documentation and payment of fees, permits for private on-site wells. Each county health department maintains records on properties with private on-site wells. Sewage Disposal Environmental health staff provides assistance to residents who desire to or already have on-site sewage disposal systems on their own or their rented property. This assistance includes providing the activities, referral and documentation necessary to obtain required permits for on-site sewage disposal. Each county health department maintains records on properties with on-site sewage disposal systems.
