The Henry County Refuse Department handles the County's household trash disposal. The Refuse Department manages seven Convenience Centers located throughout the County that are in place for County residents to dispose of their household trash and certain other items.

Provides review and approval of proposed construction projects, issues various construction permit, inspects and approves work in progress, issues certificates of occupancy for new construction, enforces minimum maintenance provisions for existing buildings, administers Cross Connection Control program to insure safe drinking water, assists public, contractors, architects, etc., with building or construction related issues. Inspects elevators in all commercial buildings and enforces rental housing program.

Enforces the Building Code, performs inspection of new and existing buildings, reviews permits.

Provides residents with comprehensive environmental health services such as food, water and building inspection, sewage disposal, septic and well permits, public food permits, regulation of public food establishments, tourist establishment sanitation and restaurant applications. Investigates reports of food illnesses, working with businesses and citizens to educate and correct deficiencies. Also investigates reports of raw sewage or other reports of ground water contamination.

Responsible for the enforcement of laws related to the construction, repair, demolition, removal or relocation of buildings or structures as well as the installation, alteration, repair, use and operation of heating, plumbing, lighting, ventilating, refrigerating, electrical and mechanical appliances and equipment within those structures.

The Department of Community Development coordinates Lynchburg's construction, code compliance and community revitalization efforts. Community Development helps our businesses, institutions, neighborhoods and residents create a thriving City through efficient plan review and permitting, thoughtful planning and preservation and effective property maintenance and grant project implementation. The City of Alexandria collects trash from its residential customers once a week on a designated collection day, Monday through Thursday. Residential customers are charged a Solid Waste User Fee on the residential tax bill on a bi-yearly basis.

The Building Development Division (BDD) enforces the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code to ensure the buildings are safe. BDD deal specifically with reviewing building construction plans and specifications, issuing building construction permits, performing critical building construction inspections, and ensuring building code compliance.

We also inspect and/or permit daycare and adult care facilities, school cafeterias, restaurants, hotels/motels, bed and breakfasts, festival and fair vendors, campgrounds, summer camps, migrant labor camps, and marinas. Additionally, we investigate animal bites and/or potential rabies exposures and certain environmental complaints.

Zoning Division provides a vital service to County residents through the interpretation and application of the County's Zoning Ordinance. The division is composed of three teams - Counter Services, Plan Review, and Zoning Enforcement.
