The Department of City Planning is responsible for developing and implementing short and long-range plans, studies, goals, and policies, as developed with the community and approved by the City Council, that reflect the needs and interests of residents and the city. The department’s mission is to analyze, prioritize and plan for the equitable, resilient, balanced, and sustainable use of the city's land and other resources to enhance the quality of life for current and future generations. Adopt-a-Highway is a program launched by the Virginia Department of Transportation in 1988. Volunteer groups and individuals adopt a two mile or longer stretch of roadway and make a two year commitment to pick up the trash at least four times a year.
The Facilities & Environmental Services Department (FES) provides the following services. Maintains and improves the physical assets of the county, such as buildings, grounds, and infrastructure Ensures compliance with federal environmental laws, promotes pollution prevention, and minimizes waste Oversees the planning, design, and construction of all major capital improvements projects Coordinates with the Community Development Department to protect the natural resources of Albemarle County. Other department services include providing copy services, mail services, building security, fleet management, and street sign maintenance.
Provides building permits, rezoning, variance, conditional use permits, land distributing permits, zoning amendments, and special exception permits.

Provides government information about the city of Staunton.
Our office provides site evaluations and permitting for on-site sewage disposal (septic) systems and private wells, as well as regulatory oversight for private sector evaluations and designs in these fields. We provide health education to the community with regard to safe food handling practices, lead exposure, radon, rabies, and other environmental health concerns.ur office also inspects and/or permits daycare and adult care facilities, school cafeterias, restaurants, hotels/motels, bed and breakfasts, festival and fair vendors, campgrounds, summer camps, migrant labor camps, and marinas. Additionally, we investigate animal bites and/or potential rabies exposures and certain environmental complaints.

The Street Division includes repair and replacement of concrete curbs and gutters, highway medians, driveway entrance aprons, sidewalks, filling of potholes, repairs to deteriorated sections of streets and grading of gravel shoulders.
Offers citizens round the clock access to city services and information. Residents simply dial 3-1-1 (or 757-727-8311. Customer Advocates help with everything from reporting a missed trash collection or pothole to answering questions about the city budget or inquiring about a community center's hours.

Provides information and processes applications for building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing. Building permits are required to erect, enlarge, alter, remove, demolish, or repair a structure. Serves contractors, homeowners and county agencies.
Provides inspections for life safety, issues permits for buildings and structures, maintains building and property maintenance codes compliance and issues Certificates of Occupancy or Completion and Certificates of Appropriateness for exterior improvements in the Historic District.
Provide protection of public health, safety, and the environment through effective and innovative management, operation and maintenance of the sanitary sewer systems.
The Planning and Zoning Department provides land use information and issues zoning permits for the erection, construction, reconstruction, moving, adding to, enlargement or alteration of any structure, or the establishment or expansion of any land use, and investigates zoning violations.

Responsible for the collection, handling and disposal of solid waste generated in Lee County. The Solid Waste Department operates a centralized Transfer Station near Jonesville. No waste is disposed of on site as all Lee County waste is now transported to the City of Bristol Solid Waste Management Facility. All waste brought into the Transfer Station, other than bagged household garbage and metal, will be billed to the customer or contractor. The Transfer Station DOES NOT accept dead animals or hazardous material. Convenience Centers are provided at the following locations: Ben Hur, Blackwater, Dryden, Ewing, Flatwoods, Gibson Station, Jasper, Keokee, Olinger, Rose Hill, St. Charles, Stickleyville, Sugar Run, Woodway. Location: From Highway 58, turn south onto State Route 70, take first left onto Bus Shop Road, and follow signs.
