The purpose of the Williamsburg Area Arts Commission (WAAC) shall be to assist Williamsburg City Council and James City County Board of Supervisors and other appropriate bodies and organizations in supporting and stimulating excellence in the arts and in creating an atmosphere which encourages the growth, development, and accessibility of cultural amenities for the benefit of citizens and visitors.

Provides a youth organization whose mission is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to develop the qualities and skills needed to become responsible citizens and leaders. Call to seek more information about regular programs offered.

Provides professional planning and technical resources, a concerted approach to regional cooperation, planning assistance with program delivery, and a forum for the interaction of appointed and elected local government officials and citizens members.

Provides holiday assistance programs such as Christmas and Thanksgiving baskets, Christmas kettles and Adopt A Child gift program. Must pick up and complete forms at Social Services. Completed forms are to be taken to the Salvation Army to receive a Wish List form.

Plans and monitors development and expansion of hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, mental health centers and other health care services. Makes recommendations to state officials regarding whether major capital expenditures, such as addition of hospital beds, should be approved.

Provides an international service orientated civic club with emphasis on sight/hearing conservation, drug awareness and diabetes awareness. Helps to pay for glasses, eye exams and hearing aids for the needy.

Offer a variety of programs for seniors including games, meals, classes, holiday celebrations among other special events and programs.

Mentor program for pregnant teens. These adult role models have successfully raised their own children and assist the teen throughout her pregnancy and up to the baby's first birthday.

Provides resources to men and churches to produce spiritual growth through training, conferences, small groups, and leadership development.

Provides a women's civic organization that seeks to improve the quality of children's lives through the support and education of their families. Major Project(s): Opportunity Shop and Community Partnership with Women Build. Fundraisers: Quackin' for a Cause--Duck Race and Rivanna River Festival. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: Membership in the Junior League provides various in-league and community volunteer opportunities.

A day support program, which enhances independent living skills and maximizes opportunities for community integration. Activities include life skills groups, support groups, recreation and socialization opportunities. The supported employment program provides employment services designed to teach the basic work habits necessary to be successful in obtaining and maintaining employment.

Kingsway Apple Tree Project - Christmas for Inmate's Children. Apple Tree applications must be submitted by the inmate through the prison chaplain. Application Deadline is December 1.

Provides a program whose main objective is to monetarily support the Fluvanna County Library through fund raising activities-book sales, bake sales, etc; and to provide volunteer services to the library. Also provides general library services without charge to all residents of Fluvanna County.

Higher Grounds mentoring program empowers youth to develop the necessary skills and abilities required to maximize their opportunities for personal growth and productive citizenship. Higher Grounds provide school based, academic, therapeutic, and group mentoring based on personal need and development. Youth are connected to current community resources aimed particularly at the development and improvement of character and competency. Providing the basic skills needed to transition into adulthood through education, skills training, exposure to different cultural ideas, and the building of confidence.

Provides a bag or two of food needed to prepare a Thanksgiving dinner.

Big Brothers Big Sisters' mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported 1-to-1 relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. Our Charlottesville office serves the surrounding areas of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Nelson, including Waynesboro/Augusta/Staunton.

Provides a center for seniors offering meaningful services and activities including consumer education, health education, crafts entertainment, interaction, and fellowship, the serving of hot, well-balanced meals at noon to persons aged 60 & older. Transportation is provided to and from the center. Center located at the Stephen City United Methodist Church.

Teenagers who are pregnant or parenting their first newborn are eligible to receive adult mentoring services from women who have raised children of their own. Mentors reinforce basic health education related to pregnancy and parenting such as nutrition, infant growth and development, coping skills, and the importance of receiving health care services for themselves and for their infants. Resource Mothers help young parents keep medical appointments, develop plans for the baby’s care, stay in school or continue working, delay repeat pregnancies until adulthood, and solve the myriad of day-to-day problems involved in being a new parent.
