Colonial Behavioral Health provides a continuum of care in counseling services to through individual, group and/or family therapy. This program uses treatment and intervention to increase the strengths and resources of each individual served. Outpatient counseling serves individuals with mental health, substance use and co-occurring disorders. The program empowers individuals to build skills needed to begin the recovery process. Evidence-based practices are emphasized. Services are recovery focused and based on person-centered planning and client-directed outcomes.

FOOTHOLDS works one on one with children and their families to build a healthy family environment. The program helps identify obstacles, increase communication skills, structure positive home, social skills development; provides support, guidance and links to resources; and educates caregivers. Service in Scott County is provided in partnership with Planning District One Behavioral Health Services.

The Expectant Mother Program's purpose is to not only provide traditional case management, but also educational, emotional and everyday support specifically for pregnant and new mothers. Medical attention will be coordinated and arranged with local health facilities that will provide general and prenatal care. One-on-one counseling services will include counseling services with a psychologist and professional counselor. Parenting Support Groups that utilize evidence-based parenting support groups will be provided as the woman prepares for child birth and may also include other family members for navigation and co-parenting services.

Offers services to children and adolescents under age eighteen experiencing problems and disruption in their home, school, or community due to emotional disturbance and/or substance abuse. Provides treatment to support optimal functioning and to maintain the child in the community and/or least restrictive environment. Services include individual, family, and group counseling, play and expressive art therapies, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, case management, crisis intervention, psychiatric evaluation, medication management, and discharge planning from state and private mental hospitals with linkage to community services. Therapy services are provided to detainees at Roanoke Valley Juvenile Detention Center.

The treatment is particularly sensitive to the unique problems of youth with post-traumatic stress and mood disorders resulting from gun violence, physical abuse, community violence, or grief. Cognitive behavioral techniques are used to help modify distorted or unhelpful thinking and negative reactions and behaviors. Trauma-focused therapy can address and improve the symptoms of post-traumatic stress in youth.

VHBG's Therapeutic Resource Center provides counseling, consultation, and psychoeducation services to individual youth, families, and groups. All of these services are supervised by a licensed professional. These services effectively and directly meet the needs of youth and families served through VHBG and better mirror a youth's Individual and Family Service Plan (IFSP). VHBG provides a Youth Mental Health First Aid USA eight-hour public education program free to the community each month. This program introduces participants to the unique risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems in adolescents, builds an understanding of the importance of early intervention, and teaches individuals how to help an adolescent in crisis or experiencing a mental health challenge. Mental Health First Aid uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to assess a mental health crisis, select interventions and provide initial help, and connect young people to professional, peer, social, and self-help care. The course is designed for adults who regularly interact with youth (teachers, school staff, coaches, church and youth group leaders, parents, social workers, hospital staff, law enforcement, employers, etc.). The Youth Mental Health First Aid USA curriculum is primarily focused on information participants can use to help adolescents and transition-age youth, ages 12-18. The course teaches participants the risk factors and warning signs of a variety of mental health challenges common among adolescents, including anxiety, depression, psychosis, eating disorders, AD/HD, disruptive behavior disorders, and substance use disorders.
