Volunteer program for older adults, ages 55 and up, who are willing to use their life experiences and skills to answer the call for neighbors in need.

Trains individuals 18 and older to perform patient care, run errands, provide transportation services, hospitality, administrative assistance and continuing education and/or in-services. The opportunities are long-term/ongoing.

Volunteers provide service in a variety of ways. Some opportunities involve interacting directly with patients and visitors and some opportunities are more behind-the-scenes. There are three different volunteer programs for adults (non-students), college students (undergraduate or graduate level), and junior volunteers (high school students).

Team of over 1000 volunteers contributes a part of the care that UVA provides. A variety of activities are available. Some involve direct contact with patients. Others involve working with families and visitors, while still others occur behind the scenes.

Volunteering at Carilion Clinic is a great way to help others and be a part of the organization's mission for a healthier community. Volunteers work in more than 30 different departments at Carilion. From hosting patients and visitors in waiting rooms, to assisting customers in the gift shop, to delivering cards and flowers to patients to literally guiding the hundreds of visitors to wherever they need to be on a given day, each volunteer is an unsung hero who touches the lives of countless people they encounter. The volunteer program is for ages 14 and older.

Provides volunteers who offer assistance throughout the hospital to patients, visitors and staff.

Volunteer Opportunities

The CSB offers volunteer and student training, supervision, and opportunities for service and personal growth. Volunteers may be providing direct service or administrative support, or helping with special projects.

Provides professional, compassionate care for patients and their families facing a limited life expectancy. Volunteer opportunities range from direct patient/family help to office tasks, help with fundraisers, memorial services, speaking engagements, etc. The program is long term/on going. All individuals must have a personal interview and complete a volunteer training course on hospice care, dealing with such topics as death and dying, family dynamics, communications skills, spiritual care, the grief process and the role of the volunteer. Does not accept court referred volunteers.

Provides volunteers that can be assigned to almost any patient care or non-patient care area of the hospital depending upon their interests. Duties may involve deliveries to patients, patient transport, clerical duties, etc.
