The Southwest Virginia Medical Reserve Corps is a cadre of volunteer health care professionals and community members trained to respond and assist the local Emergency Response Systems in the 13 counties and 3 cities that comprise Southwestern Virginia. Throughout the region, citizens are prepared to assist with public health crises in the Lenowisco, Cumberland Plateau and/or Mount Rogers Health Districts.

Volunteers ages 16 and above are always needed to socialize our pets. All volunteers are required to attend the Basic Pet Socialization class prior to working with our animals. Primary service is placing service dogs with people with disabilities. Serves people with a wide range of disabilities, including autism, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, brain injury, stroke, paralysis, and many other debilitating conditions. Partners with facilities to place dogs to assist in educational, healthcare, counseling, and visitation settings. While these are not service dogs and do not have public access, they work daily to assist a wide range of people to overcome their disabilities. Offers volunteer opportunities.

Provides low cost spay and neuter, dental services, low cost vaccines & microchips to the public and to animals adopted through Chesapeake Animal Services. Also run an adoption and foster care program.
The Orange County Virginia Animal Shelter houses unwanted, lost or abandoned animals. Provides safe haven and vet care for hundreds of animals of all ages and descriptions each year. When funds are available, offer spay/neuter certificates that help pay for spaying and neutering pets. Please contact the shelter directly to see if these funds are available. Volunteers needed.to come every day, once a week or once a month. Donations of canned dog and cat food, rawhides, chew chips, dog biscuits, and plastic cat toys are always greatly appreciated.
