Support Groups - Richmond, Brain Injury Association of Virginia

Provide information about support groups around the state. The groups operate independently of BIAV but are provided technical assistance as they want from BIAV. Groups provide personal support and fellowship from members and help people who are living with a brain injury - either their own, or that of a loved one. Facilitators and group members help each other adapt to living a life affected by brain injury and provide fellowship and understanding. Some groups offer educational programming, recreational, and/or advocacy activities depending on the preference of the members. Individual and Family Support Program - Richmond, Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services

Designed to assist individuals on the waiting list for the intellectual disability (ID) or developmental disability (DD) Medicaid waivers to access short-term resources, supports, and services that will help them remain in their own community homes. The IFSP Funding Program provides financial assistance to individuals and families awaiting services through one of Virginia's Developmental Disabilities waivers. Individuals on the waitlist may apply for financial assistance to cover eligible costs that support continued living in an independent setting.

Heart Disease Support - Annandale, Mended Hearts Northern Virginia Chapter 200

Offers support to individuals with heart disease, their family members and cardiac care professionals. Visits patient/family in hospital before and after surgery and maintains telephone contact thereafter. Holds monthly meetings: four each year are informational; six are support groups and two are social. Also publishes bimonthly newsletters containing cardiac-related information. Make visits to heart surgery patients 365 days/year at the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus Heart and Vascular Institute and Virginia Hospital Center (formerly Arlington Hospital). Have provided over 1262 Therapeutic Heart Shaped Cough Pillows during 3,558 visits to heart surgery patients.

Family Support - Woodbridge, Arc of Greater Prince William/INSIGHT, Inc.

The Arc offers training workshops that provide information and resources to assist families of children with disabilities on topics such as waivers, advocacy, and more. These are open to both parents and professionals from any locale. A special education attorney volunteers monthly to offer free 45-minute consultations (2 per month) on special education topics. The Family Support Coordinator also will provide information and referral via phone, Zoom, or email. We also sponsor the annual Circle of Support Conference.
