The VDSS Youth Services Program, including the Chafee Foster Care Independence Program, supports youth and young adults who have experienced foster care as they transition into adulthood. We partner with local departments and community organizations to provide guidance, resources, and opportunities that promote stability, independence, and long-term well-being. Services may include education and career planning, housing and financial assistance, life skills development, mentoring, and support networks that encourage connection and leadership. Our goal is to ensure that every young person has the tools, confidence, and community they need to build a safe, fulfilling, and self-directed future. Fostering Futures is a foster care program available to teens and young adults in foster care after they turn 18. This voluntary program allows your local department of social services (LDSS) to provide you with financial and social support and services until you are 21 years old. It can cover things like housing (with your foster parents, room and board at school, or supervised independent living when you are ready), education and/or job training assistance, and other independent living needs specifically for you.
