Additionally, we serve as a temporary home for stray animals discovered within our county, working tirelessly to reunite them with their owners.

Petersburg Animal Control and Shelter is a city governed animal control facility and open door public shelter.

Oversees the enforcement of County ordinances and laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia pertaining to the control of domesticated animals and the operation of the C. C. Porter Animal Shelter.

The department investigates complaints of cruelty to animals, quarantines animals that have bitten humans, provides 24-hour emergency service for injured or stray animals and removes stray dogs and livestock from streets and public areas. The Animal Shelter is operated in accordance with state and local law.

Adoptions are free to the public, however, you must sign an Adoption Agreement, and a Spay/Neuter Agreement stating that you will have the animal spayed or neutered within a certain period depending on the age of the animal. In the case of a dog bite, please notify the Lee County Sheriff's Department at 276-346-7777, they will page the Officer to respond to this matter. Receives stray and owner relinquished animals from Roanoke City, Roanoke County, Botetourt County and the Town of Vinton and is an open intake facility. Primarily handles stray animals picked up by the Animal Control Officers employed by the municipalities, but also accepts strays that are found, and animals owned, by citizens of the municipalities served. Does NOT have a veterinarian on staff and is unable to provide medical care for pets owned by the public. If a pet is ill or injured, please visit a personal veterinarian. Has an adoption program, works with rescue organizations and has a foster program.

Enforces the City animal control ordinances and all other state laws and city ordinances. Officers are certified police officers and possess certifications in euthanasia.
