The Animal Services Unit is charged with protecting animals from inhumane treatment. Animal Services officers enforce state laws and county ordinances as they apply to domestic animals. The unit operates a shelter for the complete care of animals in their custody. The Animal Services Shelter provides comprehensive medical care for homeless or unwanted cats and dogs until they are adopted or placed with an animal rescue organization.

Provides shelter, care and protection for animals. Seeks out suitable homes for animals and works to prevent cruelty to animals. As a last resort, seeks to humanely dispose of an animal. Volunteers ages 16 and above are always needed to socialize our pets. All volunteers are required to attend the Basic Pet Socialization class prior to working with our animals. The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria operate the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter, an open-admission facility accepting any and all animals brought to us from within the jurisdiction. AWLA have made a commitment to help animals in need with the help of the community. AWLA care for more than 2,000 animals per year, including dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, iguanas and chinchillas. Specially-trained staff also assist area wildlife that have been injured or are in distress, with the ultimate goal of releasing them back into their natural habitat or transferring them to licensed wildlife rehabilitators for care and eventual release.

Animal Control is responsible for the enforcement of state laws and city ordinances regulating the keeping of domestic animals within the City.
The main purpose for Animal Control in Amelia County is to ensure that people are safe from animals and that animals are both safe and are being properly taken care for. Additionally, a leash law within certain areas of Amelia County requires that dogs must be restrained from running at large in public areas and under the control of their respective owners.
Provides low cost spay and neuter, dental services, low cost vaccines & microchips to the public and to animals adopted through Chesapeake Animal Services. Also run an adoption and foster care program.
The Louisa County Animal Shelter operates under guidelines of the Commonwealth of Virginia providing humane sheltering, care, adoption, and redemption of stray and surrendered animals. Encourage spay/neuter of animals, increase the public awareness by educating citizens on responsible pet ownership, and to prevent any form of animal cruelty. A county pound and must maintain a few open runs for new intakes at all times. When filled up we work very hard not to euthanize for space by calling out to adopters and rescues for help.

The Orange County Virginia Animal Shelter houses unwanted, lost or abandoned animals. Provides safe haven and vet care for hundreds of animals of all ages and descriptions each year. When funds are available, offer spay/neuter certificates that help pay for spaying and neutering pets. Please contact the shelter directly to see if these funds are available. Volunteers needed.to come every day, once a week or once a month. Donations of canned dog and cat food, rawhides, chew chips, dog biscuits, and plastic cat toys are always greatly appreciated.
