This facility treats people who have sustained second or third degree burns to exterior surfaces of their body or to the respiratory tract that were caused by fire, excessive heat, flash explosions, hot steam or water, chemicals, electricity, or radioactive substances or heat.

The Burn Trauma Unit at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is a nine-bed intensive care unit serving patients who have suffered trauma and/or burns. Most patients come as a result of motor vehicle accidents, blunt force trauma, penetrating wounds such as stabbing or gunshot wounds, and falls. This unit also serves as an overflow unit for the sister unit with neurosurgical patients, as well as overflow from the medicine unit.
