It includes abstinence education, providing contraceptives and reducing exposures to sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). It also includes improving a woman's general health so she can conceive and deliver a healthy infant and minimize her risk factors for the diseases and injuries that can decrease the length or quality of her life.

A family planning clinic is available for men and women at each health. Services include a physical exam, a pap smear, a check for sexually transmitted diseases, a discussion of birth control, assessment/treatment of minor vaginal disorders and the contraceptive method of choice.

FAMIS covers uninsured children under age nineteen years and younger whose family meets the income guidelines. FAMIS MOMS serves for pregnant women. FAMIS Select is a health insurance premium assistance program. Dental services for children enrolled in FAMIS or FAMIS Plus are provided through the Smiles For Children program. The Smiles For Children program encourages good dental health and recommends regular check-ups with your child's dentist.

Provides Family Access to Medical Insurance Security Program (FAMIS). Provides health coverage for children who have not had any health insurance coverage for 6 months. Designed to cover children of working VA families who make too much money to qualify for Medicaid and too little to afford private health insurance. Baby Care is a home-visiting, case management program providing nursing assessment, medical and social referrals for high risk pregnant women and infants up to the age of two.

The Loving Steps Program is the Virginia Healthy Start Initiative. This program provides case management services during pregnancy and after delivery in order to prevent infant deaths. The Loving Steps team works to get you the services you need, answer your questions and teach you about taking care of yourself and your baby.
