Investigation of disease outbreaks, provide immunizations/medication as indicated, and provide education to maintain the health of the public.

Provides information on symptoms, treatment and prevention of all communicable diseases including influenza, hepatitis, SARS, West Nile Virus, tuberculosis and excluding sexually transmitted diseases. Follows up as medically indicated.

The health department may assist in providing pre-exposure treatment for rabies to persons potentially at-risk to occupational exposure to rabies. If the offending animal cannot be found or captured, we advise potentially exposed persons, in consultation with their physician and the Health Director, regarding post-exposure treatment. Whenever a human being sustains an exposure to a mammal in such a manner as rabies is a concern the health department should be notified as soon as possible after the exposure occurs. Post-exposure treatment (PET) consists of shots of immune globulin and rabies vaccine (a series of 4 injections given over 2 weeks). PET must begin prior to the development of rabies' symptoms, and is usually started as soon as possible after the exposure, generally within ten to fourteen days after the bite or exposure.

Centra Lynchburg General Hospital, with 358 licensed beds, is an emergency and critical care center specializing in cardiology, emergency medicine, orthopedics, oncology, neurology, and neurosurgery.

Offers assistance and refers customers who have been exposed to tuberculosis for chest x-rays, follow-up and medicines as needed. Sexually transmitted diseases can be treated at the clinic, free of charge. Free, confidential HIV testing and counseling is also available. Communicable disease investigations, surveillance and control is a district service

Provides environmental and health services for area residents. This includes well and septic permits, food safety inspections, family planning, STD treatments, immunizations, communicable disease investigations, HIV/AIDS testing, care and supportive services, and women, infants and children (WIC) nutrition services.

Health department offices provide assistance and referral for treatment for those exposed to tuberculosis. Does not provide routine tuberculosis testing for employment purposes.
