Dominion Academy is a therapeutic, private day school that provides a structured educational setting for special education students in need of behavioral support. The school is licensed by the Virginia Department of Education and accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Special Education Facilities for students ages 5 - 22.

Provides a state operated program at CHKD which is supervised by the Virginia Department of Education. Hospital Schoool Program offers educational services that cover inpatient status, transition to home or school, and maintenance and follow-up care through outpatient clinics. Our staff consists of administrators, support staff, teachers, educational consultants, an assistive technology specialist, art therapist and a music therapist. All Hospital School Program services are free. Parent permission and medical staff permission must be obtained before any services are initiated.

Ivy Creek School (ICS) is a public separate day school providing special education and related services for students with emotional and behavioral disabilities in grades K - 12 from participating divisions. Students are placed at ICS via the IEP Team process and receive intensive and structured educational services and supports designed to meet their unique individual academic and behavioral needs. Student social-emotional needs are addressed through a collaborative 'treatment team' approach, which includes both 1:1 and group counseling, as well as clinician supports, which are all embedded into the structured school day, setting Ivy Creek School apart from other specialized programs. The ICS instructional program is aligned with the State Standards of Learning (SOLs), utilizing principles of universal design, differentiated instructional practices and collaboration with sending divisions. The ICS does not offer an adaptive curriculum instructional program.

Provide parents with information and support as they work with schools to meet their child's learning needs. These needs include but are not limited to academic, social, emotional, developmental and functional skills. Many of the school staff also take advantage of the services at the Center. Promoting a positive partnership between parents and educators, the Parent Resource Center helps families understand the important role they play as part of the educational team.

Promotes parent and community awareness of the programs and services for children with special needs. The Center encourages parent participation in the education-decision making process and provides seminars, training programs, and information to foster the parent-professional partnership.

The primary goal of the program is to provide early childhood education and intensive mental health treatment to children. In addition, SCAN works with caregivers to empower them to help reduce the long-term effects of traumatic abuse and neglect for children. Provides an accredited special education school for children and adolescents with emotional and behavioral problems. The philosophy of the school is that all students have the capacity for learning and growth, regardless of their disability. Provides children and adolescents with emotional or behavioral problems the skills necessary to return to a less restrictive school environment, and to engage in healthy relationships with adults, peers, and society. The teacher directs students toward achieving goals, enabling students to feel in control of their actions. The role of the therapeutic staff is to explore conflicts and promote emotional, behavioral, and social growth. Therapy and staff work with students and their families. Coping skills, such as anger management, problem-solving, and assertiveness training are taught and reinforced. A structured behavior modification program, with rules, consequences, and reinforcement, assists in motivating students to achieve goals. Recreational, art and activity therapies provide an outlet for emotional expression and opportunities to excel in areas of interest. An emphasis on achievement, a positive and nurturing environment, and emotional support from the staff, help to build self-esteem and decrease feelings of inadequacy, which are common in youth with emotional disturbance and behavioral problems.

The PREP Parent Resource Center serves parents of children with disabilities or special needs and promotes partnerships among parents, educators, and our community resources. We provide free access to information, workshops, and resources to support the success of all students, especially those with learning challenges, special needs, and disabilities. You can also call for individualized consultations at no charge.
