Mecklenburg County Public Schools offers an alternative school program to assist students who are unable to complete their education in a traditional manner in the public school setting. Students referred to the alternative school will continue their academic classes using NovaNet. NovaNet is a computerized, web-based curriculum that meets the Virginia Standards of Learning. The Secondary GED preparation program is an option for students 18 years of age and younger who require a nontraditional program because they are academically at-risk and/or a potential dropout. This program is designed to provide students with the academic knowledge necessary to pass the GED test.

The only Virginia Board-approved High School Equivalency examination in Virginia is the GED test, developed jointly by the American Council on Education and Pearson Vue, to enable persons who have not graduated from high school to demonstrate the attainment of abilities normally associated with completion of a high school program of study. The 2014 GED® test series measures not only high school equivalency, but also career and college readiness.
