Licensing/Regulation - Richmond, Virginia Defenders Indigent Defense Commission

The Virginia Indigent Defense Commission (VIDC) was statutorily established in 2004, replacing the Public Defender Commission, to protect the Constitutional right to counsel for people who cannot afford to hire their own lawyer. The VIDC oversees 28 public defender offices and 2 satellite offices across Virginia, with a central administrative office that manages the certification of public defenders, as well as private attorneys, seeking court-appointment in criminal cases. The VIDC provides high-quality training to all certified attorneys to continually improve criminal defense representation to vulnerable citizens of Virginia who are not able to hire an attorney of their choosing. In addition, the VIDC is responsible for the following: Promulgate and enforce the mandatory Standards of Practice for Court-Appointed Counsel which sets out detailed expectations for attorneys seeking appointments in criminal cases; Re-certify attorneys seeking appointments in criminal cases and maintain the certified counsel list; and develop certification training courses

Vital Records - Stafford, Stafford County Health Department

Death records are filed at the health department in the county in which the death occurred, not the county in which the person lived. Certified copies can be obtained only by a relative of the deceased or by a representative of a funeral home. Local health departments have death records on file from 1963 to present.

Environmental Health - Front Royal, Warren County Health Department

Provides the following Environmental Health Services: Complaints Environmental Health documents and investigates residents' complaints about environmental health problems, including reports of food and waterborne disease, mosquito problems, improper sewage disposal and other public health issues. Food Services Local health department staff inspect and issue required permits to such food service establishments as school cafeterias, restaurants, food stands at community events, camps, day care centers, B&B's and migrant camps. They work with those who provide prepared food to the public to help assure that food is wholesome and healthy. The local health department is responsible for working with local dairies to assure a healthy product, free of disease. This is done through regular inspections and ongoing input into dairy operations. Drinking Water Environmental health staff provides assistance to property owners who have or desire to have private wells on their property. They assist with required activities and issue, upon proper documentation and payment of fees, permits for private on-site wells. Each county health department maintains records on properties with private on-site wells. Sewage Disposal Environmental health staff provides assistance to residents who desire to or already have on-site sewage disposal systems on their own or their rented property. This assistance includes providing the activities, referral and documentation necessary to obtain required permits for on-site sewage disposal.
