Legal Assistance - Charlottesville, University of Virginia Women's Center

The Women's Center Free Legal Clinic provides information about legal issues to community members and University employees. Local attorneys volunteer their time to provide 30-minute appointments through the clinic on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month (with exceptions around holidays). Legal Clinic appointments are typically conducted over the phone.

Services include assistance with applying for family reunification, permanent residency, citizenship, employment authorization, special visas and more. Bilingual staff members, who are accredited by the Department of Justice (DOJ), offer immigration advice and assistance in completing immigration forms. Immigration Counselors provide assistance with completion of necessary paperwork and ensure adherence to required procedures, assisting people in maintaining and/or securing appropriate legal documents.

Serves clients age 60 and over, who live in the 5th Planning District of Virginia, and are unable to qualify for Legal Aid Services or afford a private attorney. Clients may be provided with either information or case consultation. Issues include: Power of Attorney documents, advanced medical directives, public benefits such as Medicaid, and Living Wills.

This program provides or arranges for legal advice, counseling and representation to older persons with economic or social needs. Individuals can receive limited legal services which include wills, powers of attorney, medical directives, and notary services.

Advocacy - Roanoke, Local Office on Aging

An Ombudsman is defined as one who investigates complaints and assists in achieving resolutions. Serves as an advocate for older persons who receive long-term care services. Investigates concerns and complaints regarding long-term care services in nursing homes, adult care residences, and in-home care providers. Addresses concerns about diet, staff, quality of care, environmental conditions and violations of clients rights. Includes the Volunteer Ombudsman Program and the Elder Abuse Prevention. LOA's Long-Term Care Ombudsman is part of a program administered through the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman of the Virginia Association of Area Agencies on Aging (V4A). Provides affordable legal assistance for those dealing with federal immigration authorities. While this is a fee based program, CCC offers affordable rates and will waive fees for victims of violence and other at risk populations who do not have the means to pay.

Hotline - Lynchburg, LawLine, Virginia Legal Aid Society

Intake and advice hotline that aids low-income clients in receiving advice more quickly, and screening for possible attorney representation. Six LawLine intake workers screen, interview, and advise eligible callers. Most of the workers were previously Virginia Legal Aid Society paralegals and secretaries with substantial experience in working with Legal Aid Society clients. They are supervised by two full-time attorneys, each of whom has fifteen or more years experience in representing low-income clients.
