The Energy Assistance Program (EAP)consists of three components; Fuel Assistance (FA), Coolng Assistance (CA) and Emergency Crisis Assistance (CAP). Financial assistance is available one time per year per person and is restricted to low income area residents aged 60 and older in the City of Fredericksburg and the 4 surrounding counties. Assistance up to $100 once a year. This agency helps with the last $100. If bill is more that $100, will need client to bring proof of pledges from other organizations.

Those under age 60 must have a disconnect notice (those age 60 or older do not need a disconnect notice). EnergyShare is a Salvation Army program which determines eligibility for EnergyShare and may have additional requirements when qualifying customers for this program. Program is active only when funds are available. Valid ID and income verification is required.

Assists low income households, particularly those with the lowest incomes that pay a high proportion of household income for home energy. It is comprised of four components: * Fuel Assistance The local department of social services accepts applications from the second Tuesday in October through the second Friday in November. Program helps with the cost of heating. Does not provide Direct Assistance * Crisis Assistance . Applications for equipment related assistance, security deposits, and emergency shelter are accepted from November 1 through March 15 at local departments of social services. Assistance for the purchase of heating fuel and utility bills for primary residences are available from the first workday in January through March 15. Assistance Available Heating equipment - repair or replacement Heating equipment - supplemental (example: fuel tanks) Security deposit - primary heat expense Heating fuel/utility - primary heat expense Program helps when fuel assistance and other resources do not meet the need. Does not provide Direct Assistance * Cooling Assistance helps with cooling emergencies resulting from extreme heat in households with a vulnerable family member. May repair or purchase cooling equipment. Vulnerable persons are children younger than age six, adults over the age sixty, or people with disabilities. Applications are accepted for cooling assistance from June 15 through August 15. Does not provide Direct Assistance. Administers the Weatherization grant for Virginia, but does not provide direct weatherization services.

Surry County DSS may provide financial assistance for utilities, rent or mortgage payments for eligible households who have experienced a loss of income due to the Coronavirus pandemic.. This includes financial assistance for utilities, rent or mortgage payments past due beginning March 2020 and onward. Financial assistance is a first come first serve basis. There is no cap of the amount at this time.

Household must contain at least one vulnerable person (aged 60 or over, child under six or a disabled individual) and there must be a cooling need. The following types of assistance are available if the eligibility conditions are met and the assistance will ensure cooling: purchase or replace and install an air conditioner; repair a central air conditioning unit or heat pump; payment of an electric utility security deposit; payment of the electric bill to operate the cooling equipment.
