Habitat for Humanity builds and sells affordable housing to low- and moderate-income families. Construction or renovation of each Habitat house is a cooperative effort between volunteers, house sponsors and the buyer(s) of the house. Participating families provide at least 300 hours (called sweat equity) toward building their own and other families' homes. Homes are purchased with a zero-interest equivalent, 20 to 30-year mortgage.
Administers federal and state rental subsidies, housing rehabilitation grants, and numerous other general and neighborhood housing programs. Home Rehabilitation Programs
Provides low cost housing to families and some individuals with disabilities. Has two and three bedroom apartments. Apply directly at apartment building. Section 8 available through VHDA.
Provides ongoing assistance with rental payments for qualified low income households. Participants lease privately owned single family homes, apartments and manufactured homes. There is a waiting list for this program.
Provides VHDA Rental Assistance Housing Choice Vouchers (Section 8) to enable low income families and individuals the opportunity to obtain safe, sanitary housing at affordable rents. Provides affordable housing through the Affordable Apartments Program and accepts Section 8 Vouchers. Rates range from $1057 to $1215 per month. Applicants not on Section 8 must make at least $31,710 per year and no more than $34,950 for 1 occupant; $39,950 for 2; $44,950 for 3; $49,900 for 4; $53,900 for 5; $57,900 for 6.
Provides affordable housing. Currently offer two different apartment complexes consisting of Elizabeth Miller Gardens and Farrier Court. We have 50 units designated for the elderly and disabled between the two complexes and the units range from one bedroom to five bedroom townhouses. Rent is based on income and utilities are included. Provides low income housing in 13 buildings for area residents. Offers 1,2 and 3 bedroom apartments that are convenient to schools, shopping, banking, and restaurants. Easy commute to Harrisonburg and Winchester. Accepts HUD Section 8 Vouchers. Income limits apply.
A 108 unit facility that provides housing for low income families, people who are aged, and people with disabilities. Usually has a waiting list.
An ecumenical, Christian housing ministry that seeks to eliminate substandard housing by building homes for low-income families. Affiliates employ a combination of volunteer labor, sweat equity and tax-deductible monetary and material donations to build the homes. Financing is through loans which are deposited into a fund that supports the construction of additional homes. SAW Habitat for Humanity also provides for critical home repairs.

Low-rent public housing: Own and operate 4 apartment developments for low income families (328 total apartments). Rents are based on income. Section 8 rental assistance: Provide rental payment assistance to low-income families living in private rental housing. Conduct various activities in selected neighborhoods with high percentage of low-income citizens and substandard housing. Activities include acquisition and demolition of dilapidated housing, provision of sites for new housing, construction of new housing, land for open space green areas. Activities and neighborhoods vary from year to year. Activities limited to City of Lynchburg.
Provides income-based 1-bedroom apartments for elderly (age 62+)and/or disabled. Income eligibility required.
Provides safe, decent and affordable shelter as well as economic opportunity for those of greatest need and which will effectuate a positive impact on the community.
Helps people with disabilities who are homeless or who need to locate affordable, accessible housing.

The Fairfax County Rental Program includes rental property owned and/or operated by the Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority, and serves eligible low and moderate income households. Income limits apply.
Provides affordable housing for area residents. 108 units are available with rents based on 30% of income. Must make at least $13,000 a year before deductions apply. All utilities included in rent. Does not accept HUD vouchers.
Building affordable homes for families in the City of Winchester and the counties of Frederick, Clarke, and Shenandoah. Homes are sold to partner families with a low interest mortgage. Habitat families are selected: 1) completion of application and credit report, 2) ability to pay mortgage, 3) inability to obtain conventional financing for a home, 4) living in substandard housing, 5) meet income requirements and 6) agree to partner with affiliate.
