A Continuum of Care program funded through the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD). Community First aims to reduce the length of time homeless households experience homelessness by connecting them with safe and affordable housing within the community. Community First clients work with a Housing Coordinator to identify their barriers to housing stability and to address these barriers during in-home case management.

Provides two years of low-cost, subsidized housing to formerly homeless families at risk for long-term homelessness and identified as having the commitment and potential to succeed with intensive intervention and support. Offers job mentoring and monthly workshops on success oriented subjects. Clients have access to computers and they, and their children, may attend all classes at the Family Learning Center free of charge.

Residents must be physically independent (able to take care of personal hygiene, bathing, etc.), mentally stable, and have no sexual crime history or violent crime history. ID check is completed by local police department upon check-in. Shelter is drug and alcohol free, and residents will be drug and alcohol tested randomly. Residents are required to attend church and devotion services daily/weekly.

Provides an overnight shelter for any individuals who would otherwise be outside in freezing temperatures, mid-November through Mid-March. This is not a shelter for families. The shelter is open on the nights when temperatures are low during the winter time period. This is a nighttime only shelter; residents are not permitted to stay during the day or to store possessions at the building.
The adult women's location is downtown at FXBG Baptist Church.
Transportation is provided from downtown locations each night 6:00-6:30 pm. In order to get on the bus to the Cold Weather Shelter, prospective residents should attend the evening's community meal at one of the downtown churches and wait for the bus at that location. Prospective residents may also provide their own transportation to the Cold Weather Shelter. Do not arrive the Cold Weather Shelter before 6:30 PM each night.

LIFT is licensed for 25-beds for males & females transitioning from the foster care system to independent living in the community.
