Description

Southwestern Virginia Mental Health Institute (SWVMHI) is a 179-bed state psychiatric institute operated by the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS). The Institute serves adult and geriatric individuals. SWVMHI is the primary state psychiatric hospital for individuals located in Health Planning District III, far southwestern Virginia. Southwestern Virginia Mental Health Institute is accredited by The Joint Commission. and is eligible to receive third-party payments, including Medicare, Medicaid, and Champus.

Available to citizens statewide, Virginia's public mental health, intellectual disability and substance abuse services system is comprised of 13 state-operated facilities and 40 locally-run community services boards (CSBs) The CSBs and facilities serve children and adults who have or who are at risk of mental illness, serious emotional disturbance, intellectual disabilities, or substance abuse disorders.
