Description

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps, is the federal nutrition assistance program in the United States. It provides eligible low-income individuals and families with monthly benefits to purchase food at authorized retail stores. The program is administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) through state and local agencies. SNAP benefits are provided via an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card, which works like a debit card and can be used to buy food items such as fruits, vegetables, meats, dairy products, and bread. Non-food items, alcohol, and prepared hot foods are not eligible for purchase with SNAP benefits. The program aims to reduce hunger and improve nutrition by increasing access to healthy food options.
