Households meeting income requirements and in jeopardy of eviction. Applicants in permanent housing must be in danger of losing their housing. Applicants in temporary housing or without housing must be in need of a security deposit(s) and/or rental assistance to secure permanent housing. Recipients must be in temporary financial crisis due to unavoidable circumstances, including, but not limited to, accident, illness, job layoffs or reduction, job termination, loss of day care or transportation necessary for employment, or a delay in receiving approved benefits. The applicant must have been self-sufficient prior to the crisis, the crisis must not be a chronic problem, and the applicant must be able to be self-sufficient at the end of the financial assistance. The applicant must be within the maximum income limits (of HUD Area Median Income) and have exhausted their own resources and all other sources of assistance.

Description

New River Community Action's Homeless and Housing Programs offer financial services to those at-risk of becoming homeless (Prevention) and those already homeless (Rapid Rehousing) to help them obtain or maintain permanent housing. Clients must meet strict grant criteria to receive financial services through Homeless and Housing Programs and adhere to program policies and guidelines for continuing services. When available, funding is used for participant financial assistance in the form of rent deposits and last month's rent, rent payments, utility deposits and utility arrears, utility payments, and application fees. New River Community Action is a non-profit agency working with community groups in the New River Valley to address local conditions of poverty in Floyd, Giles, Montgomery, and Pulaski Counties and Radford City. Our programs include Emergency Assistance and Food Pantries, Head Start, Children's Health Improvement Partnership (CHIP), Swift Start, Homeless and Housing Programs, To Our House men and women's winter shelter, Virginia CARES, and free assistance with tax preparation through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program.
