In 1757 the South River Meeting House was the first place of worship in Lynchburg. After two meeting houses, the stone Meeting House was completed in 1798. It was restored for the 1986 Lynchburg Bicentennial. John Lynch is buried in the adjacent historic cemetery. The Meeting House and cemetery are Virginia Historic Landmarks. They are also listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
